Study for at least a year. If you can study for longer, do it. So, yes, start studying as an undergrad. Some people will try to sit the exam after studying for a couple of weeks or months. Your grad school acceptance depends heavily on this so prepare properly.
The GRE general test is offered almost constantly. The GRE specific exams are only offered a few times a year. You’ll need to go to the website for the exact dates.
You can retake the exam if necessary. Up to 5 times a year. They’re good for about three years.
