You need to get a very powerful system for it to still be even a little bit useful in 6 years. In reality, you would be better off buying a new, less expensive computer every three or four years than dropping upwards of four thousand dollars for something that will still work when you (apparently) finish your doctorate.

Also, good brands are Toshiba, Gateway, and (occasionally) Dell. Or you could have a computer shop custom build you a laptop.

this is a very common question, and usually people answer with far more advanced (and expensive) hardware than is truly neccesary. for college, if you dont want to play games, you really dont need that much. i suggest getting a compaq presario notebook because they are comparitivly cheap (good quality though.) you probably want to get sometihng with 2 gb of ram if you want to last more than 5 years with moderate proficiency. 3 would be a good investment though. to save money i suggest getting a turion processor. though less powerful, this will save lots of money, and still provide great service for anything most people will ever do, compared to more expensive models like the intel core two duo. feel free to email me with more questions advice etc.

You are sort of vague in you question, but the answer depends on many things, such as budget, needs and how much memory do you need and what types of use will it have? But I know of a few great systems that carry a low price tag and would suit all of you college needs for the entirety of college, if you do not intend on gaming. I am placing the links here. Hope it helps. Good luck to you.

I’d go with a Gateway or a Sony. I have a sony vaio that I’ve had since 2000. I personally use it for school, games, internet, and music. i upgraded the Hard-drive to a 250GB, and all I have is 512mb of ram( when I first got the computer all it had was 62MB of ram) I’m looking to put about 2GB of ram. So there you go. Just remember any computer you get will soon be out dated in a year or so but you can always upgrade them and what not. So my advise to you is to get a cheap Sony or Gateway with at least room for two ram cards and you can always upgrade the ram to meet you requirements.

    Hope this helped,
    Scott

For college I think you should get a Mac as they have no viruses so no data loss ad they are not very chunky and They can run Windows now because of bootcamp. Mac is ideal for college students . The specs are very good and as your going college you wont need all these demanding softwares. 2gb of Ram is enough for 6 years plus you can upgrade it in macbooks it tells your how to upgrade and open your all macbooks have 2gb of ddr3 ram and at least 2.0ghz you can alter it acording to your budget
