What career path should I take? Physical Therapy?

Hi and welcome to my blog,
I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!
Currently I am in a bad situation. I lost my job at Circuit City Inc in 2009 when they went out of business. I enjoyed my job it was not hard to sit behind a desk and approve/deny financing. But I also loved the people that I worked with that is what made the job fun and interesting. So when Circuit city went out of business I decided to fall back on my degree (Bachelors of Science in Psychology). I worked at residential treatment facility with at risk youth and I also worked a group homes. Those jobs were ok. I didn’t really enjoy it. The pay wasn’t that great and I had to deal with bad kids that wanted to try to fight me, curse at me, and harm themselves and others.
So now I am unemployed and I think this a good time to change fields/career path. So I thought about Physical Therapy. From what I understand it is a great field to get into. The only thing is I am nervous that once I apply that the schools are not going to take me in the program because my undergrad GPA is low. I do have to take prerequisite courses (physics, chemistry, anatomy) and take the GRE before entering the program but will it be enough for me to get As in those courses and try to score high on the GRE? Or should I just do something completely different. I don’t know please help me figure this out.
books for GRE psychology?
I intend to take a GRE exam in psychology. could you recommend any books or topics that could help me in overcoming the exam.
Can someone please explain this to me (improper fractions and addition)?
I am a senior in college, psychology major. I haven’t taken a math course in 4 years and it’s just not my cup of tea. I am studying for my GRE’s and I am completely STUMBLED on something that is probably very simple.
How does -3 + 1/3 equal -2 2/3?
How did we get that?
Thank you so much to anyone who can dumb this down for me!
Okay. I understand up until -8/3, but I don’t understand where the 6 and 2’s come from?
Go for an MD or PhD program?
It’s a bit early for me still yet–I am on my 73rd hour of my BS in Psychology. I am starting my core sciences for medical school, but I am confronted with a problem: my GPA is 3.846 based on junior status, and this is competitive for both medical school and doctoral programs, however I know that if I continue with the pre-med track (Organic Chem, Physics I & II, Bio II remains for me), my GPA will certainly be lower (let’s face it, they’re harder classes).
Now I can continue with my BS in Psychology and write my honors undergraduate thesis and then apply for a PhD program in Clinical Psych., or I can sign up for the MCAT next year and try my luck with medical school, thereby lowering my GPA and competitiveness for the PhD program.
PhD programs in Clinical Psych. generally do not require the heavy science load that MD programs do, and thus the GPA requirement is a bit higher for PhD programs than MD programs, although the GRE is supposedly much easier than the MCAT.
I don’t want to go for medical school and hurt my competitiveness for PhD programs, but I’d really like to get an MD because i’m interested in psychiatry and pharmacology (I want to practice as a psychiatrist).
I’m not particularly interested in other things physicians do, but I know an MD is a requirement for psychiatry.
What do you think the best course of action is?
Harvard for Graduate school.?
Okay, so currently I’m a sophmore at the University of Houston. I’m double majoring (psychology (b.s.) + liberal studies major (political science, german, and anthropology- b.a.) I love languages so I’m taking russian outside of school. I’m a very well rounded student and outside of my academic life I focus on the arts (ballet, painting, etc) .I really want to shoot for Harvard but of course I won’t be terribly upset if I don’t get accepted. I understand it’s very difficult and competitive and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get in. That being said, since I am attending UH would that hurt my chances of getting into a school like Harvard? I’m a very good student and I stayed in Houston to be with my family (I wasn’t ready to leave just yet) but of course I’m wanting to get my PhD and I don’t want to live in Houston all of my life so I’m looking for schools on the east coast. My ex- step father went to Harvard and graduated with honors and that has always really inspired me.
Also, how early should I begin studying for the GRE? or LSAT? Even though I am not a pre-law student, I also want to receive a J.D. along with a PhD. I’m a life long learner and love school so I’m not in a rush to earn my degrees, I want to enjoy college and learn all I can! = )
Thanks!
One more thing- I’ve heard the GRE is mostly vocab. is this true? I started listening to WORDSMART on itunes (which is awesome I recommend it for anyone trying to boost their vocab.) so I would be prepared for the exam!
Is it better to guess on an exam even though I will lose 1/4 of a point for each wrong answer?
I am taking the GRE Psychology exam in Nov. On this paper exam, wrong answers cost 1/4 of a point but there is no penalty for not answering questions.
I want to hear from anyone who has went back to school. What was your experience like?
I am 26 and already have a BS in psychology. I graduated 5 years ago and after spending time in corporate America behind a desk came to the realization I want to go back. My goal is to return and get my DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy). Before I even apply to grad school I have to take another chem, physics, 2 physiology courses and the GRE.
Here are my concerns…
I feel so removed from school I feel that taking these courses will be extremely difficult.
Financially, I am not quite sure how I will make things work. I have been making around 80K per year and even though I live on much less, I am not quite sure how I will support my lifestyle. This is much different than when I was 19 with 3 other roommates, no car payment and no real bills to speak of.
Has anyone been through a similar situation? If so, how was the experience for you?
Thanks!
Should I go straight to Graduate School, or wait?
I am graduating with a bachelor’s in psychology this Spring 2011. I intend on going to graduate school to obtain a Doctorate and practice counseling and potentially teach at a university in the future.
I am only 19 years old (I skipped a couple grades) and I feel like I am being rushed. I have taken the GRE and I am not too happy with my results. My GPA is excellent; however, I know most graduate schools require a minimum GRE score, and unfortunately, mine isn’t very adequate.
I am not sure whether I should graduate undergrad, and then go immediately on to graduate school for my master’s, but not have my heart set on the school. Or, I will graduate, and then enroll in a GRE prep course, while working, and hopefully bring my GRE scores up greatly, and then apply to more desirable schools.
Graduation is rapidly approaching, and since I don’t have my heart fully set on a specific school(s), I feel like it is foolish to rack up my loans by attending graduate school that isn’t my first choice. Unfortunately, I feel like a loser by taking time off school.
GRE General exam vs. GRE Subject exam?
How does the GRE Subject exam compare to the GRE General exam as a factor in graduate school admissions?
Subject is psychology; not so much concerned about whether the test is needed, more concerned about how both are weighed in the admissions process.
If your GRE scores are low it there still a chance to get into an OT graduate program?
I am currently getting all my prerequisites ready to go to graduate school like taking a few prerequisite courses I have not taken yet, volunteering at a clinic, and somewhat getting ready for the GRE. I am horrible at taking exams and wondering if I will still have a chance in getting into graduate school for Occupational Therapy. I am planning to apply to San Jose, USC, Dominguez Hills and Loma Linda. My GPA is 3.6 I have three letters of recommendation coming along from great individuals and I am currently at this moment working on my personal statement.
I have not taken the GRE test just yet I took a practice one and yes I felt completely anxious. I got a headache just reading the questions. I was a psychology major and trying to get into Occupational Therapy.
How do I get into a PsyD program if I didn't major in psychology?
PsyD programs would require you to take a GRE for psychology right? I have no problem studying very hard and very long for that test to do well, and I could take a semester of psych courses at a local college as well.
Chances of getting into PhD programs…GRE scores, gpa, etc…?
I am applying to several Cognitive PhD and Sensation and Perception PhD programs. My gpa is lower than I would like: for December 15th deadlines it will be entered as a 3.32 and for deadlines after December 15th it will be a 3.48. Unfortunately, I was extremely unmotivated my first two years of school and did not do well (2.82). However, my last three semesters I have had gpas of 3.65, 3.91 and 4.0. My gpa within psychology is a 3.75 and my upper level course (3000 and 4000) level is a 3.92.
I do not have my writing score from the GRE yet, but I received a 670 on the verbal and a 740 on the math for a total of 1410.
I was just curious as to whether or not my GRE scores could compensate for my GPA. Most programs that I am applying to have a MEAN Gpa of 3.5 and a MEAN GRE of 1200. So I am below on one, higher on the other.
Also, among psychology PhD’s my scores put me in the 96th percentile for both math and verbal.
Obviously I am just nervous about my Gpa. Thanks!
Too Late to Go to Graduate School for Psychology This fall?
Hi, I majored in Economics, BA, I had a 3.25 GPA and an 1140 GRE. Any chance that if I apply now I can get into any kind of respectable graduate school for Psychology that will eventually lead to a PhD? I have never taken a Psyhce course.
How difficult is the GRE exam?
I’m getting ready to take the GRE this next spring, but I am worried about it. I really don’t take tests well and it is all that is standing between me and graduate school. Someone please be honest, how hard is it? I am focusing on Psychology, what are the areas that I need to score high in? Talking to school admissions people is like talking to a brick wall, maybe ya’ll know more then they do ![]()
I can’t say that I am really worried about it, I am curious. No one I know has ever taken it and I am the first person in my family to go to grad school. I really just wanted to know what it was like. Thanks for the advice.
How much time is recommened to study for the GRE general exam?
So I have a couple of months before I apply to a PhD program for psychology. Most applications are due by December. However, the GRE test is required for the application. The exam is on or around October 24, 2009 and I’m a little worried that I will not be able to prepare myself in enough time. How much time would you recommend to prepare for the GRE? And how many hours a day if you only had like a month to study???
What’s the best study guide for the GRE psych subtest?
Have you taken the psychology subtest of the GRE? Can you reccomend a good study guide?
When can i register for the GRE subject test?
I need to take a GRE subject test in psychology. On the website, it says registration is closed. How and when can I register for this test?
Thank you.
What is the best book to use to prepare for the GRE? Princeton, Barron’s, Kaplan, or other books?
This will be my first time taking the GRE and I am wondering which book is better in preparing you for the exam. I’ve already bought a Princeton 2010 GRE book but was wondering whether I should purchase another book (such as Kaplan, Barron’s, or some other book). Which books, study habits, and test techniques helped you? I am wanting to get an M.A./Ph.D in Psychology as I am a double major in Psychology and Human Development with a Minor in English. Thanks!
