Competitiveness for Coast Guard OCS?

Hi and welcome to my blog,
I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!
This is a repost from an earlier question because I realized I had left out a lot of key information. I’m still a newbie to yahoo answers! Thank again for all the incoming advice!
I am planning on speaking to a recruiter. But of course, but before I do I just would like to get some feedback on how competitive I would be for OCS so I won’t get laughed out of the recruiter’s office. I am currently getting my masters in public administration and want to serve my country. Here are some of my stats and any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Undergrad GPA- 3.8
*worked full time during most of my undergrad career
Degree- Political Science
Act- 27
Gre-1160
1 year of volunteer work with the Red Cross
Age: 24
Height: 5′10
Weight: 180
Exercise: Usually twice a day at least 5 days a week. Cardio in the morning and weights in the evening.
My criminal record is clean except for a few speeding tickets.
In terms of leadership and work history, my job during my last year of college was as a shift manager at blockbuster and prior to that I had worked at a law firm. I also was treasurer and then president of my college’s Model Arab League debate team for a year. With the red cross I have not really had the time to take on too much responsibility but I am sure that if it would help I could put in more hours and try to get more responsibility.

Thanks for the quick responses! Yeah my criminal record is clean except for a few speeding tickets.

GPA for Political Science PhD Programs?
Hello all,
I am interested in getting a Ph.D in political science, and I have been reading a lot of threads online about how graduate schools are interested in more than just GPA, GRE scores, etc. I am currently a freshman at the University of Scranton – it seems odd that I would be looking into Ph.D. programs at this very early stage, but the intensely competitive nature of vying for a Ph.D slot depicted from these forums and threads have piqued my interest a little early.
My first question concerns MA programs. My school does not currently offer an MA program in political science, and I am applying to grad school for an MA/PhD program. Forums and threads seem to indicate that applicants with an MA already have an edge in the process. Is this rumor found to be more accurate than not?
In addition, I currently have a 4.0 GPA. I realize, of course, I’m a freshman, and that GPA is bound to decrease (although it’s certainly not my intention). I have been invited to join an Honors Program. However, my school lacks many publishing opportunities. This program offers me the ability to write a thesis, but there is no public outlet to publish this at my school. This being considered, will grad schools take my school’s lack of publishing opportunities against me in the admissions process?
Finally, should I adopt a mentality to preserve my GPA at all costs – including taking more challenging and diverse courses? Which is more important – a rigorous academic curriculum or a pristine GPA?
If anyone out there can offer any insights, I would greatly appreciate the help.
Many, many thanks!
Should I get a graduate certificate in Public Administration?
I got a B.A. in Political Science/International Relations, and got a pretty low gpa – a 2.1.
I really want to get a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, but am highly doubtful that I will get accepted into any credible university. I am considering taking a GRE prep course so that I can try to do well on the GRE exam and possibly have a chance of getting into grad school.
Also, the university I graduated from has a Graduate Certificate in Public Administration. I was wondering if that would be a better option for me? It is a very credible university so I know that it won’t be one of those diploma mill certificates.
Any advice?
should i go to law school or pursue a masters in urban planning?
-going to a california state university in southern california in fall of 08
-planning on double majoring in political science and urban planning
-need to decide now…so i can enroll in Lsat practice coureses or gre practice courses
-i already know about joint jd/urban planning degrees, i just want to concentrate on one not both
What score would I need on the GRE to qualify for a good graduate program?
If the whole law school thing doesn’t work out (which I’ll be bummed if it doesn’t,) then there are a couple of fields I always thought I’d like to study: Political Science or Geography.
I have a 3.25 GPA at the University of Louisville, which I think is a pretty good institution. What GRE score would I have to have to be competitive for schools like U. of Washington-Seattle, U. of Georgia, U. of Florida, U. of Texas, Rice, etc. (I don’t want to attend an "elitist" school, but still an institution with a great reputation.)
Thank you!
