grad school admission- continuing ed? trying too hard?

Hi and welcome to my blog,
I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!
So I am cleaning up my portfolio for grad school applications, took a couple more grad level courses locally and scored an A and a B+. Took the GRE subject test, and GRE General. I still think, that although I have a masters in the major I want to earn a PhD in, that my undergrad record with a C average will STILL close the doors on the top programs I want to go to. Also, I don’t think I scored so hot on the subject test. And, I had to take the couple of courses recently since in my masters program I didn’t reconcile my lack of preparation back then, and hence scored some B-s in my masters program.
So, if I don’t get into a top program that I would like to go to, do people think that simply going to the program I want to earn a PhD in and taking some more courses and getting A’s in them and recommendations is a viable way to get into that program? Or would I be trying too hard? Or even worse potentially setting myself up for a possible rejection?
Is it abnormal that I feel like everything is so difficult?
I feel like I can’t function in everyday activities, like work & school. I already have my Bachelor’s degree, but I had a low GPA, due to my disability. It feels like everything is hard to me. Is this a mental blockage or what? I would like to go to Grad School & get my Master’s degree & get a PhD, but looking @ my school’s course descriptions, I freak out. I feel dumb. I think I’d be wasting my time if I continue with school because I don’t think I’ll make it to Grad School since I don’t do well on research papers & I feel like the GRE is too difficult. It seems like I can’t function normally like other people, & as far as employment goes, I can’t keep a job because people say I work too slow. If I were to rush, anxiety would kick in & I’d have a panic attack or accidentally mess up or break something. I’m getting disability benefits, but I don’t want to make such small income for the rest of my life. I want to know how I can make myself more functional.
gpa around 2 and thinking of grad school in US. am i nuts?
first of all, hats off to those in NUS, Singapore who gets CAP 4 or 5 ( GPA 3 or 4). i don’t know how they are doing it.
But I can barely make it above 2.
I am studying in engineering faculty of national university of singapore and in my second year now. my gpa or what they call ‘CAP’ (cumulative average point) here is just above 2. i still have 2 years to improve my gpa but here it’s really hard to raise your gpa but very easy to lower it because each semester throughout the 4 year course, weigh equally unlike in other universities or other countries where the later years count more towards the final GPA calculation.
so if you know any uni in US which can accept an international student like me to their science or health admin master program ( afte my uni experience here, i am no longer bent on getting a phD and be an academic all my life)
i would be very happy to hear about it. I don’t have high hope to get into UPenn or Carnegie Mellon with my GPA. but is it possible for me to get into 3rd and 4th tier uni?
i am quite certain that the highest i can bring my gpa score is 2.5. And i would have 3 year work experience by the time i apply grad school cos it’s my bond here to serve 3 years in singapore after graduation for taking government grant.
But i am set on going somewhere after my time here cos’ i love travelling and experience new things like student life.
I will try to score well on my GRE but i think GPA counts alot in the application too. and will i still be able to financial assistance like loans, teaching assistant ship or any other category even if i get into 3rd or 4th tier uni?
I had a perfect academic history until i arrived in NUS.
Like i got all As in my A levels which i finished in UK but i just lost it in NUS. but does that matter to the admission committe? please share your experience if you have any.
hi pat. thanks for your info.
in UK, some universities do not count the first year at all but only the last 2 years or so.
i guess NUS follows US system then.
I have been looking at many grad school websites and most of them ask for gpa 3 or better and i am quite discouraged since i dont have the minimum requirement.
A master program that is a complete joke, quit?
I’m in a master program in environmental science that is a complete joke. For environmental sustainability class we have to copy and paste the curriculum ourselves from wikipedia, for the whole course. For Environmental impact assessment we had exactly 4 lectures in a whole semester, then we will have a 3 hour exam on it???? PLUS the project is to "summarize"an existing eia study, not to actually conduct one. ! This program is in the Arabian Gulf. It’s the only option I have so far, but I have taken the GRE recently and applying for phd in environmental science in the USA. I already have a BS in environmental science from USA, but I had to come back for family issues temporarily for about 4 years now, and instead of halting my env. career, i thought a master meanwhile would be good, but this is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much stupidity. Ironically, if I finish this semester i’ll only have to finish two more classes, a project, and a childish comprehensive exam (very stupid, gruelingly stupid). This week is the last week i can quit the semester, should I do that? and focus on getting good GRE instead? I mean in the US you get an automatic masters degree on route to phd, so why bother with this below mediocre degree?! i feel it was a mistake to start it
help, i’m so upset.
Harvard for Graduate school.?
Okay, so currently I’m a sophmore at the University of Houston. I’m double majoring (psychology (b.s.) + liberal studies major (political science, german, and anthropology- b.a.) I love languages so I’m taking russian outside of school. I’m a very well rounded student and outside of my academic life I focus on the arts (ballet, painting, etc) .I really want to shoot for Harvard but of course I won’t be terribly upset if I don’t get accepted. I understand it’s very difficult and competitive and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get in. That being said, since I am attending UH would that hurt my chances of getting into a school like Harvard? I’m a very good student and I stayed in Houston to be with my family (I wasn’t ready to leave just yet) but of course I’m wanting to get my PhD and I don’t want to live in Houston all of my life so I’m looking for schools on the east coast. My ex- step father went to Harvard and graduated with honors and that has always really inspired me.
Also, how early should I begin studying for the GRE? or LSAT? Even though I am not a pre-law student, I also want to receive a J.D. along with a PhD. I’m a life long learner and love school so I’m not in a rush to earn my degrees, I want to enjoy college and learn all I can! = )
Thanks!
One more thing- I’ve heard the GRE is mostly vocab. is this true? I started listening to WORDSMART on itunes (which is awesome I recommend it for anyone trying to boost their vocab.) so I would be prepared for the exam!
PLEASE! Chemistry graduate schools should I apply to with a 2.5 GPA? Most people don't apply for the MS right?
I ruined my GPA my freshman and sophomore year so it’s only a 2.5 overall. However my GPA for my last 60 hours is a 2.988. I have decent research experience and solid recommendation letters. I am taking the GRE next month and I have been studying months so I am expecting a competitive score. Of course I already know that schools look at the whole package but of course top tier 1 schools aren’t going to be as lenient. Any suggestions of schools I should apply to? From my research it seems that most of the California State Universities (long beach, Sacramento, LA, san diego, san jose) don’t specifically have GPA and GRE requirements but I keep reading that they are extremely difficult to get into but I don’t know if that applies to graduate school. Also, I applying for the MS only and I know most people apply for phD so I should have a pretty good chance right? I am also thinking that there aren’t that many chemistry students period so that might increase my chances? Also, at these big universities typically how many spots are available?

how my chances are for getting into top grad school?
Hello all and thanks for reading my question.
I am a graduate student (PhD) at university of southern California (USC). I study civil engineering here but the department is not very good in civil engineering and I wasn’t able to get any funding from the department. I would like to apply to better schools but I have one problem which is my undergrad grades which I did in another country. (it is 14/20 which is average). How ever my masters GPA is very high (3.98/4) and the courses I have taken here were very tough courses. I also have a good GRE score. Do you guys think I can get into a better school bases on what I said or just continue what I am doing at USC?
by the way I can get strong recommendation letters from professors at USC.
Too Late to Go to Graduate School for Psychology This fall?
Hi, I majored in Economics, BA, I had a 3.25 GPA and an 1140 GRE. Any chance that if I apply now I can get into any kind of respectable graduate school for Psychology that will eventually lead to a PhD? I have never taken a Psyhce course.
Tulane University GRE score for PhD in International Development?
Does anyone know the acceptable range of GRE scores Tulane will accept for their PhD in International Development? Of course, they suggest 1200 but Tulane claims to be flexible so I’d like to know how flexible.
