PostHeaderIcon How difficult is the GRE general exam?

Looking for info on gre preparation classes, gre preparation courses, gre test course and more?

Hi and welcome to my blog,

I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!

I looked at a practice GRE general exam and I thought the questions were very easy. I am a premed student majoring in biochemistry and minoring in math and in case I don’t get into medical school I will try to get into graduate school (worse case scenario). Why does the GRE seem easier than the MCAT? To me the GRE’s questions look like basic math and English. Are the practice tests like the real exam or is the real exam much more difficult?

PostHeaderIcon What exam do engineering students have to take for graduate school?

Do engineers just take the GRE, or is there a more specific test (like how medical school has the MCAT) ?

Thanks

PostHeaderIcon Ok, i need somebody with some insight to help me with post undergrad decisions?

I am a biology major. with minors in chemistry. I am a auxiliary member at the my home town hospital where i volunteer in the ER. I also did some research in HCV with one of the tenure here at my university. I have a 3.5 GPA and 2 semesters left before i graduate. I can go to medical school with my MCAT score of a 39. I can go to graduate school at cal tech because of my GRE scores and EC’s. But TBH, Right now I think I want to switch it up and go to law school.

The thing is I have taken nothing that would prepare me for law school. Does Law school look highly on broad undergrad course studies? I am willing to stay another year after i could graduate to do some volunteering at something that might make it easier for me to get into law school, and to study for the lawschool exam and to take a few (40 hours) worth of classes to try and get into law school.

What i would like is some input on what i should do in this situation. Facts, stats, ideas anything please

PostHeaderIcon Many questions about Medical School and/or PA school…?

I’ve tried finding an online forum to post these in, but I can’t find one with enough relevant information and users….so I’m hoping someone on here can assist.

Alright, so I’m going to be blunt here….I was a pretty bad student for my first two years of college. I’m currently in my junior year now working on a degree in Liberal Arts (officially). I suppose I could change my major whenever I want…but that’s not really what this is about.

My current GPA is under 3.0. When I graduate, it MIGHT barely be at or above 3.0. this, of course, will make it difficult to be accepted into most medical schools from what I understand.

Now, the thing is, my grades over the summer and this semester have been impeccable…also, all my grades in health-related fields have been A’s (granted, its only Developmental Psychology and Biology 201 w/ lab). I am interested in the health field and already scheduled two classes that are considered prerequisites at most schools for next semester (Microbiology and Genetics).

My main issue is, I don’t really know how things are going to play out. I am a poor college student…and Medical school is EXTREMELY expensive. PA school is less expensive, but also less appealing to me. While I wouldn’t mind working under the supervision of a licensed physician, I would especially enjoy the more challenging cases associated with an MD or a DO.

I currently attend Penn State University. I am looking for guidance both on the application process:
Who should I get to write letters of recommendation?
For PA school, it normally lists 200-500 hours of patient-contact health care experience as a prerequisite for applying. How do you get that kind of experience?
What sorts of things are schools looking for in the essay? Like I’m assuming they don’t want to just read another well-written "I want to be a doctor to help people" essay.

…and on my abilities to get into a medical school or PA program. I’m looking for recommendations in or close to Pennsylvania of schools that would be reasonable for me to consider.

In addition, I’ve had the following questions:
How likely is it that a hard-working individual with a GPA <3.0 would even get an interview at a decent Medical School?
How difficult are the MCATs? What about the GREs? Some PA schools require the GRE.

Thanks for any help in advance!

PostHeaderIcon Go for an MD or PhD program?

It’s a bit early for me still yet–I am on my 73rd hour of my BS in Psychology. I am starting my core sciences for medical school, but I am confronted with a problem: my GPA is 3.846 based on junior status, and this is competitive for both medical school and doctoral programs, however I know that if I continue with the pre-med track (Organic Chem, Physics I & II, Bio II remains for me), my GPA will certainly be lower (let’s face it, they’re harder classes).

Now I can continue with my BS in Psychology and write my honors undergraduate thesis and then apply for a PhD program in Clinical Psych., or I can sign up for the MCAT next year and try my luck with medical school, thereby lowering my GPA and competitiveness for the PhD program.

PhD programs in Clinical Psych. generally do not require the heavy science load that MD programs do, and thus the GPA requirement is a bit higher for PhD programs than MD programs, although the GRE is supposedly much easier than the MCAT.

I don’t want to go for medical school and hurt my competitiveness for PhD programs, but I’d really like to get an MD because i’m interested in psychiatry and pharmacology (I want to practice as a psychiatrist).

I’m not particularly interested in other things physicians do, but I know an MD is a requirement for psychiatry.

What do you think the best course of action is?

PostHeaderIcon If I’m taking both the GRE and the MCAT, should I take a preparatory class for both, or do I need just one?

I don’t know how similar the two tests are, but I was thinking I could just sign up for a Princeton Review or a Kaplan course for the MCAT and that might also prepare me for the GRE. The courses are very expensive.

Also, if you recommend that I take a prep class for both tests, could I take them at the same time?

Do you think it is necessary to take both tests? My situation is difficult because I plan on going into the Peace Corps before I go to graduate or medical school, and I’m not sure which I want to do at this point, but I want to take the tests before I go into the Peace Corps, even if I have to take them again later.

Any help you could give me is greatly appreciated, I can’t find information about this anywhere!
