PostHeaderIcon Help me understand new GRE score?

Looking for info on gre preparation classes, gre preparation courses, gre test course and more?

Hi and welcome to my blog,

I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!

I just took the new GRE exam and am confused as to how good or bad my scores are. The computer gave me an estimate of my scores. I got 270-370 in the verbal section and 360-460 in the math section. Please help me understand how good or bad these are! Thank you in advance.

PostHeaderIcon Graduate School/GRE Help?

I have two questions..One about the GRE, and specifically the Math Section.
And my second question being about Grad School and when to get letters of recommendation..

1. I’m planning on taking the revised GRE test in September or October of this year..However, I’m pretty awful at Math..yes, I did get my BA–but thankfully my major only required me to take one math class. I’m worried because I’m even worse at math tests. I plan on studying and practicing the guide given as best as I can..but if I do bomb the math portion (not concerned about the other two) but excel in the other sections…
do you think that will look bad and consider not admitting me? At the moment I’m looking at 2 schools..one the GRE is required, but no specific score is listed, the other a, ‘580 should be obtained’ if I do not get a 580 (or however that works out in the revised test because the scores are different) will that automatically be a determining factor?

2. I plan on attending in Fall 2012, quite possibly Fall 2013..At this point I’ll have been an alumni for 2/3 years…what would be the best time to ask for the three recommendations needed? I know who I currently want them to be from (former boss, and two professors) but if 2/3 years have passed..does look bad not having as current recommendations? or good that after that time these people can speak highly of me? Seems like a double edged sword.. So should I just wait until I know for sure if I’m attending in ‘12 or ‘13?

PostHeaderIcon Fuller Theological Seminary, Clinical Psych Ph.D. Program: How hard would it be fore me to get in?

I’d especially love to hear from anybody who went to Fuller or who is currently a student at Fuller.

Basically, I’ve entered the waiting period to hear back, and I’m going nuts over the suspense. I’d really love to go to Fuller. When I went for an interview, it just felt like "home" and I was really really excited about it. Right now, I am a Ph.D. student at a medical center studying one of the basic sciences. My undergrad GPA, overall, was over 3.9. My psychology GPA was over 3.9. My grad school GPA though, last semester (and I’m still a 1st year student now) was 2.75 because I got a C in "cellular and molecular neuroscience," and a C in biostatistics. That’s making me kind of nervous. I don’t know if people will look at that and say, "Oh, she only got a 2.75 GPA in grad school" or if they’ll say, "Wow, those look like brutal classes… and she got a B in neurophysiology anyway =P and an A in intro to neuroscience =P "

My combined GRE was an 1130 (got a 640 on the verbal, but I didn’t finish the math section—I have a math learning disability which means that I go painfully slow, even if I understand the concepts quite well). So, one of my recommendation letter writers was my college calculus professor (trying to make up for the less than lovely quantitative GRE).

My undergrad institution was very similar to Fuller (non-demoninational Christian college with Presbyterian leanings that requires all psychology majors to take a course in the integration of psychology and Christianity).

Anyway, I guess I’m just mostly concerned because I just got an email from Fuller, and I don’t know if this means that I’m on the edge of "maybe" for admissions and they need to discuss things further, or if they just randomly chose a stack of applications and said "We’ll deal with these later." So, here’s the email below. Any thoughts?
======================================…

"Thank you for participating in our early decision process for the clinical psychology program. Due to an unusually high number of qualified applicants, the admissions committee chose to defer your application until the next committee meeting. You are still under serious consideration for Fall 2010 admission, and you will be notified of your admissions decision no later than April 1st. Thank you for your patience in this process."

PostHeaderIcon Grad school concerns?

I’m a math major planning on going to grad school for statistics, and I was wondering – what are my chances are of getting into an elite school?

My biggest concern is that my GPA isn’t that great. It’s only a 3.0, but I also go to one of the top liberal arts schools in the country – so the workload is tough. However, I have gotten A’s in both my probability and statistics courses (because of this, I am currently the TA/grader for the advanced probability course offered at my school), and I have a B average in the courses I took for my major.

Here are field-work experiences that I have done/am currently involved in:
1) I am conducting an observational study as part of a project for my stats class. I plan on finding out what influences students at my college to start smoking and presenting the results later in the semester.
2) One summer, I worked for a professor at an ivy league university, calculating statistics for his experiments having to do with treatments for mental disorders.
3) I spent two summers collecting presidential election statistics for a renowned polling institute.
4) I taught an SAT math class over the summer. I was one of 4 students chosen to do this because I had a 780 on the math section of the SAT.
5) I am treasurer of my residence hall, so I do a lot of work with the student bank.

I haven’t taken the GRE yet, but I will be doing this next month.

Thanks to anyone who can help! :)

PostHeaderIcon What is the greatest positive integer "n" such that 2 to the nth power is a factor of 12 to the 10th?

I’m studying for the GRE math section, and do not remember how to get the answer easily here!! I know (from my study guide) that the correct ans. is 20. Is there an easy way to do this?? The other possible answer choices were 10; 12; 16; and 60. I don’t even really know how to eliminate any potential choices here. Thanks so much! :)
Thank you so much!! No more explanation needed. That was exactly the refresher I was looking for. :)

PostHeaderIcon Is it sufficient to prepare for the GRE exam using only the Barron's prep book?

I’ve already reviewed the math section of the Barron’s book and it seems I need to learn to relax, be focused, and learn how to solve problems easily and quickly because I know how to solve almost all of the questions but I get distracted by small "traps." I am spending half of my time memorizing words since I’m weaker in that. I am spending maybe total of one day’s time practing the essay question because I can only prepare so much for that given limited time (dec 4). Does anyone think I should consult other resources such as the Kaplan courses, etc.? Thanks.

PostHeaderIcon Question about MATH on the GRE?

Based on this course description, do you feel this is an appropriate course to take to prepare for the GRE Math section? Keep in mind, I have not studied math in 11 years.
PRE TECH/ MATH
This mathematics course provides students with an opportunity to strengthen or enhance their understanding and skills in arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry in preparation for entry to Technician/Technology programs, or for further study in other mathematics courses.

PostHeaderIcon Help with the quantitive math on the GRE?

Can anyone give me advice on the math section of the GRE? I am horrid at math, and the best score I’ve gotten out of the three times I’ve taken the GRE is a 370. I’ve tried Princeton Review (online course and book), Kaplan’s review, and many other GRE books. I don’t know what to do but I retake the exam on the 29th of Jan. Any quick tips or helpful ideas are welcome :) Thanks!

PostHeaderIcon What is the best book to get when studying for the GRE?

So the 3 books that I can’t decided between are of course PR, Kaplan & Barrons and I’ve heard a lot of good and bad things about all of them. I’m not that bad at math already so a book that isn’t too amazing in the math section wouldn’t be too bad. I do need a REALLY high score in the writing and verbal sections for the graduate program that I am going to be applying for. Which book would you recommend for a high writing and verbal score? Also, should I bother buying the CD with the book?

PostHeaderIcon What undergrad math classes are helpful if I plan to take the GRE later on?

My major only requires one math course, but I’ve always been rather weak in math and want to be as well-rounded as possible. I also don’t want to have to worry about the math section of the GRE. Thanks!
