PostHeaderIcon how hard is the GRE exam or GMAT?

Looking for info on gre preparation classes, gre preparation courses, gre test course and more?

Hi and welcome to my blog,

I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!

I’m graduating with a BA in liberal studies. I was going to be a teacher, but decided i want to get an MBA instead. The only thing I’m worried about is math. I’ve only had to go up to about algebra. I never took a calculus or trig class in my life. I’m planning on studying this summer, so I’ll have 3 months. Is that long enough? Is it something I can pass if I study?

PostHeaderIcon What is the Best GRE Prep for the New GRE exam?

PostHeaderIcon Applying to grad school (English major) – is my GPA good enough?

My cumulative GPA is only 3.81.
I haven’t taken the GRE yet (I’m taking it next month); but my SAT scores were:
Verbal: 800
Writing: 740
Math: 670

I’m taking honors independant study courses, and I know a few profs who will definitely give me good recommendations. How are my chances? How good a school can I reasonably hope to get into?
Oh, thanks. Those answers are SO helpful.

PostHeaderIcon Should I retake this course?

For nearly my entire college career I’ve been an A student. I just graduated this May with a 3.6 GPA but I have a C- on my transcript from a biology class that was exceptionally difficult for me. I recently did the math and found out that if I had taken this class as a pass/fail my graduating GPA would have been a 3.75.

Because I took overloads each semester last year, I decided to take this coming fall off to study for my GRE and start applying to graduate programs for psych. Being as graduate programs are getting increasingly more competitive, I am wondering if it would be worthwhile to retake the Bio course and make sure I do REALLY well in it this time to try and boost my GPA back up. Any grade I get in it (provided it’s a better grade) will replace my first grade.

I guess I’m wondering if I’m being irrational or if retaking the course would be worthwhile, giving my GPA bit more of a competitive edge (putting all other aspects of my transcript and experience aside).

Thanks for reading through this!

PostHeaderIcon Why is English given such an important place in competitive exams?

Many colleges and universities conduct entrance exams before admitting students into their institution. I have wondered why a good understanding of the English language is so crucial in these exams.

Take for example the Gradate Recognition Examination (GRE), an exam an aspirant has to clear, before he can start studying in the US.
The exam focuses so much on English comprehension and vocabulary. (Of course, it does include tests of math and reasoning abilities too) But English occupies such a central role.

Also, I notice that the words used to test vocabulary are not so common-place, if not altogether obsolete. Why is it important for me to know words like ‘recant’, ‘upbraid’ and ‘ameliorate’ which I have never till now and probably never will.* A thought comes to mind: How many of these words figure in President Obama’s day-to-day conversations or speeches?
* – abominate, inveterate, orotund, scurrilous, fulmination, distend… the list goes on.

Surely, pulling out a list of vague words from the dictionary, cannot be a test of the applicant’s overall competence. This is especially true in this age of globalisation where the trend is towards simplifying the language more so that people can communicate more easily.

Is it merely to filter the huge number of applications so that only a few manage to qualfy? What other purpose does it solve?

PostHeaderIcon Any advice for the GRE exam?

I will be taking the general, computer-based GRE for the first (and hopefully last) time in three weeks. I don’t really know what to expect, but I have always done well on standardized tests. Any comments on the kinds of questions asked, or tips for preparing?

I am close to graduating with a BA in English literature; I have high reading and writing skills, but my math is pretty rusty (I have only studied up to basic Statistics). I want to apply to a graduate program in Information Science.

PostHeaderIcon How good of a PhD finance program can I get into?

I have a 3.7 undergraduate and 4.0 graduate gpa both in math from a top 300 University.
My GRE is a 570 verbal and 800 quantitative.
I have have 6 yrs of part time work experience tutoring and several econ elective course.
I also have some as some undergraduate and graduate research though unpublished.
I was just trying to weigh my options so any insight would be helpful.

PostHeaderIcon Are preparatory classes required to take the revised GRE?

I plan to enroll for a masters degree in 2012, and just discovered that the GRE pattern has been revised. I suck at the math and quant part, i know there are loads of books and guides regarding GRE, but im honestly confused about whether to study on my own or join one of those expensive classes. What do you guys think?
Also, I plan to do my masters in humanities, so do i need to have a brilliant score in math or do they look at the over-all score? HELP!!!

PostHeaderIcon Does the GRE test prep course work?

I was looking into the Princeton Review course and it is so expensive! Was wondering if it actually improves your score. What is better a tutor or a course? Which is harder on the math GRE or GMAT?

PostHeaderIcon SAT study book? Helpful for GRE exam?

I went to the thrift store today and bought a 2009 SAT study book. It has 11 practice tests in it.
I am an older student, 50 years old. I graduated from college (bachelor’s degree) in 1991 after serving in the military.
I never took the SAT to get into college. I was accepted without scores because i was older than most
freshman. Anyway, I want to go back to school and get a master’s degree. But I really need to brush up on
my academic skills, etc. I was hoping to find a GRE preparation book at the thrift store .But instead only found a SAT study book. Will this book be helpful for me when it comes time to take GRE? The GRE has
verbal reasoning, analytical writing, and math. Thanks.

PostHeaderIcon Taking GRE exam again, is it ok to solve the verbal & writing sections and leave the analytic section blank?

I got a low score on the GRE in the verbal & writing sectons, but my analytic section score is very good. I’m taking the test again in november. I was wondering if I only solve the writing/verbal section and leave the analytic section, is that ok? I don’t want to do the math again and get a lower score. Please help I searched ETS no info I even asked no response yet. Thank you in advance.

PostHeaderIcon What are my chances at getting into a PhD program (see details)?

Social psychology – I have good Psychology GRE scores (95th percentile in social psych, 78th percentile in experimental psych), average scores on the general GRE (low math, very high verbal), an OK 3.45 undergrad GPA, and a handful of completely non-psych degrees – 2 associates, 1 bachelors and an MBA (I didn’t major in psych, but I have a broad education). And I have no academic lab or research experience. I’ve read dozens of psych textbooks, read most of the psych ‘classics’, and have taken about 5 undergrad psych courses. Do I have a chance to get into a social (industrial/personality/developmental) psych PhD program?

I love psychology, but stupidly went after all these degrees that would "help me get a job". I hate business and unintelligent micromanagers, I’m much more suited to a life of research and writing and experimenting. So I’m just curious about what people here with experience in this sort of thing think.
Anyway, I’m not staking any decisions on the answers here.

PostHeaderIcon what areas of study are good candidates for self-study (going back to school)?

I’m going back to school, and want to bring myself up to speed in large part by self-study. I have a 20 year old bachelor’s degree, and I want to prepare for the GRE, and upper level course work. I know math is a good candidate for self-study. Also I think grammar and English can be done on one’s own.
But what else? I want to prepare myself academically for whatever is thrown at me. I might not need
biology, if biology isn’t a part of the GRE??? I will probably go for a business degree, accounting perhaps.

PostHeaderIcon What is the realistic chance of doing well on the GRE Physics subject exam with Liberal Arts as my undergrad.?

I majored in Soc & Econ under the social scinces in my school’s liberal arts department. I know calculus fairly well and have taken Astronomy so I touch on classical physcis somewhat (I took AP Physics in HS). Discussion wise I am familiar with what is happening in the quantum world and cosmology, but the finer details-the math and formulas need work. I have a book and have began studying rigorously. My only concern is the "laboratory" section and the math on the GRE subject exam. Realistically, will my lack of the first three years of undergrad in physcis truly inhibit me from learning those sections and topics on my own? Is it naive of me to think I can do it? I would like to go into grad school for this seeing that i find it fascinating. Someone who knows would be of great advice! Thanks in advance!

PostHeaderIcon What is a GRE exam and why do people need to take it?

I am Canadian and applying for a PhD program in the USA. All schools require a GRE exam score. I have been reading about the GRE on internet sites, but I would like to know from other peoples’ experience about this exam. What is on it? And is it only the USA that requires it? How do you prepare for a GRE?
These are all great answers, especially that of Louise. Thanks! Strange that in Canada no one takes any of these tests. I am applying to a PhD in Literature, but need to know math? That’s my weak point in fact. At any rate, the test seems not too difficult to pass.

PostHeaderIcon non-native english speaker, engineer major going for an MBA should take GRE vs GMAT?

I am considering obtaining an MBA at an IB league school. But I am wondering which test should I take.. can anyone help me make the decision?

-I am about to complete a Mechanical engineer major in the US and I feel comfortable with math
-I have not taken a probability and statistic course…but I am considering this option as an Senior elective
