PostHeaderIcon What is the equivalent of a 2:1 Hons degree from a British University in terms of the American GPA system?

I have just received my degree classification, a 2:1 BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and am wondering what that is under the American system as I may want to do a masters in renewable energy in the US next year or in 2011.
P/S I’m aware of the fact that I need to do the GRE exam as well.

PostHeaderIcon 8 years of tech experience, now want to complete bachelors.. need help?

I completed a 2 years bachelor program in business administration with the exception of 1 course (not completed due to lack of time and necessity to work full time). I have transcripts but no degree. This was back in 2001 and since then I have been working. 4 years in a reputable US organization and eventually in a successful startup to date.

I now want to consider taking up education again, complete my bachelors from a reputable US university and perhaps do a masters.

My issues are:
I can’t afford tution.
I gave toefel eon years ago with a good score but have never given gre or SAT.
I want to know if universities consider work experience of an applicant cos I have years of it.
Need a starting point, any guidance will help. Thanks

PostHeaderIcon What are the eligibility criteria for Technical University of Munich?

I have enrolled in the undergraduate Chemical Engineering course in a reputed college in India. I wish to do my masters from Technical University of Munich. I don’t know German, but there are still four years ahead of me before I apply.
So, is it compulsory to know German and is there a qualifying examination to prove the language proficiency? Apart from GRE, do I have to pass IELTS or TOEFL? If yes, then which is better?

PostHeaderIcon Masters in Canada/Us?

Can anyone help me in giving information regarding MS-abroad ? I am a biotechnology graduate from India.I finished B.tech Biotechnology (4year course) with 7.4/10 (CGPA) this year. I am planning to do masters abroad, especially in canada / US . I had 4 backlogs in my second year of study due to non-specific reasons and I successfully completed all of them by the end of fourth year.

My doubts are :

1) Am I eligible for doing masters biotechnology degree in good universities of canada/US with funding if I get good GRE-TOEFL scores?

2) Am I eligible for doing Phd abroad with funding?

3) Do backlogs in academics become big issues during admission procedure?

4) Could u tell me the future of biotechnologists in canada/US ?

PostHeaderIcon Applying to grad school..help with some ??…?

Hello,
I need a mentor! I am so completely lost. I’m graduating from college and I have no idea what the next step is- but I definitely want to attend grad school.

However, i don’t know where to start
I’ve made an appointment to see a counselor in a few weeks- but i’ve seen them before and they are of no help. But i wanted to hear your advice on applying to grad school…I’ve read several books on the topic but below are some of the questions i have

1. the GRE…when do they offer it , and when should i take it if i want to get my masters… ASAP..( i believe i might be too late to even apply for next fall)- How long should i prepare?

2. letters of rec.- i dont have any professors i can ask..I am extremely shy and hardly speak up and i just moved one semester ago to this new college I’ll be graduating from BIG PROBLEM,..i dont know what to do..

3. do you really need like a 4.0 to get into a program…i know colleges say 3.0 is the cutoff but realistically speaking do they really accept people with 3.0!??? lwhere would you say is the real cutoff – 3.2, 3.3 ..do you know of anyone being accepted with below a 3.5 gpa?

4. I want to go into an MFT program- so i need field work experience. Should i do that independently or should i take a course that offers an internship? Will colleges look at it better if i took the internship as a class course?

5. can i get a letter of rec from where i intern?

Those are just a few questions i have… if you can help me with any of them- i would really appreciate it.

I want to do MS in Psychology. I have completed Masters, but had not taken any psychology class. Do I have to take some classes first to apply for that? I guess a GRE exam first. PostHeaderIcon I want to study in Canada. What is the minimum academic requirement to apply to a decent university?

I have done my Bachelor of Engineering in Computers from Mumbai University with an aggregate of 53 . I am looking to apply for an MS course in Aug 2010 in Computer Science. I really need to know if I will be able to get through to a nice university. I plan to give my GRE and TOEFL/ IELTS in Nov and that won’t be a problem at all. It’s just that I think my academics do not reflect my true potential and I’m just worried I will miss out on a top – notch university.
I’d also appreciate it if anybody can give me an idea about the job prospects in Canada after I complete my Masters.

PostHeaderIcon Am I being REALISTIC about this?

It has been my dream to do PR/Journalism work at a leading fashion and lifestyle magazine like Cosmopolitan. I want to go to N.Y.U. for their graduate magazine program. Do I have any chance of getting in?? I am:
- 22 year old female
- Indian descent
- 3.14 GPA
- Receieved my B.A. in Public Relations/Advertising
- I have several professors who are willing to write me a recommendation letter (one of them received his doctorates at N.Y.U. and can attest to my skills for an upper-level/difficult course)
- I have also done 4 internships
- I have NOT taken the GRE’s yet… I wanted to study and be FULLY prepared/confident before I take them — but I got a 1700 on the SAT’s if that gives you an idea of my capabilities

Do I have a good chance at getting in?? Especially if it’s for my masters versus a bachelors..?

PostHeaderIcon Graduate School..a couple concerns?

I recently graduated college and my GPA was not great at all. It was a 2.4 :( , I had a really hard time at college my freshmen and Sophomore yr. of college-I even pleaded with my parents to take off some time but unfortunately they did not let me.Things got so bad that i was actually almost suspended from the institution, fortunately I was allowed to take summer courses on Academic probation. During the summer course my grades started to improve tremendously and I was even doing a lot better emotionally. My Junior and Senior yr. of college turned out a lot better than the first two.You can even see on my transcript where things started to improve. Well my problem is that I’ve wanted to be a psychologist for a very long time. But i know my undergrad GPA is not up to part and not only that put I am not receiving any support whatso ever from family. I have been trying to find ways to get into graduate schools so I can reach my dreams. I was wondering what are some things I can do where graduate school is possible. I recently had an idea of getting my Masters online(and working hard) to show schools that I could do it. I’m pretty sure I could get recommendation letters from teachers that are good and do test prep for the GRE but I’v been looking online where some have said that having a Masters from an online program will be frown upon on PhD programs. So now i feel kind of stuck. Can someone give me some advice on what I should do? Please no rude answers I feel so defeated right now. I really really want this really bad,so i know i can find someway. Thanks.

PostHeaderIcon Will I get accepted into UPenn?

I am a BSN nursing student at Adelphi University in New York. My GPA cumulative is 3.7 (still working on it). My GPA also includes nursing and non-nursing courses. University of Pennsylvania requires at least a 3.0 or 3.2 with a GRE waiver.

After I become an RN I want to pursue my masters and become a nurse practitioner (either in maternity, newborn or woman’s health). What are my chances of getting into University of Pennsylvania, (They have wonderful graduate nursing programs)

PostHeaderIcon M.S.(computer Science) from U.S. universities through distance learning in India?

Hello,

I am a resident of New Delhi, India. I have received my bachelor’s degree from Delhi university, India in Computer Engineering. Now I wish to pursue my post graduation degree (masters in telecommunications) from a reputed US university. I wish to undertake the online way of studying the course from India(any city) by which i can download the lectures on PC and submit my assignments online. Regarding this I have a few question that I hope you can answer.

* Which all universities have such online education mechanism in India? I know of one, Illinois Institute of Technology. What about others?
* Besides giving GRE, do i have to give any other exams also(e.g. TOEFL etc.)?

Hoping for an early reply,
Thanks,

PostHeaderIcon how can i get into a Ph.D. program after taking nondegree graduate courses?

i was rejected from a phd program in communications at penn staet. I have a JD and bachelors but my transcripts are mediocre at best. I did not take the GRE’s. I want to try and get in through the back door by taking courses as a nondegree student and then reapplying. What are my chances?
I wasn’t able to take the GREs by the deadline b/c I was having a baby-I asked them to take my LSAT scores in lieu. The ph.d program has a Law and Policy track emphasizing First Amendment issues-I aced all my constitutional law classes. i would also consider applying to the masters and then going for the PHD. HELP!

PostHeaderIcon Is it hard to get into North Carolina State – Graduate School?

I am graduating with my bachelors in May from the University of Miami. I want to apply into the Masters of Natural Resources – Policy and Administration.

I have a 3.0 GPA, no internships, haven’t taken the GRE yet, but I do have a field course in the Galapagos. I work for the Marine Graduate School here under a field researcher. I just assisted in some field research this past week in the Bahamas.

PostHeaderIcon I went to a crappy school, completed, now I want to play with the big boys?

I went to Devry which by the sounds of my peers from other colleges, wasn’t so bad, but left me with to many questions to walk away from my education. I want to go to a really good school to further my education and sense I have my B.S. I would expect to work towards a M.S. degree. However, I am about to take my first grad course, without taking the GRE, school doesn’t require it. It’s a super hard school, top in the North Central US or something. I want to get some other opinions. If I don’t go for my masters, I could go for my FE license, or just continue working. I could also take some undergrad courses at night or weekends to help strenghten my skills. Anything is a possiblity.

The main dilima I have, besides to lazy to use spell checker on Yahoo Answers, is that I am not very confident in my ability to understand and interpret the the knowledge I will be subjected too. Perhaps because its such a big step, and its completely volunteer, unlike undergradate rigid daily schedule.?

PostHeaderIcon how my chances are for getting into top grad school?

Hello all and thanks for reading my question.
I am a graduate student (PhD) at university of southern California (USC). I study civil engineering here but the department is not very good in civil engineering and I wasn’t able to get any funding from the department. I would like to apply to better schools but I have one problem which is my undergrad grades which I did in another country. (it is 14/20 which is average). How ever my masters GPA is very high (3.98/4) and the courses I have taken here were very tough courses. I also have a good GRE score. Do you guys think I can get into a better school bases on what I said or just continue what I am doing at USC?
by the way I can get strong recommendation letters from professors at USC.
