PostHeaderIcon Any advice for the GRE exam?

I will be taking the general, computer-based GRE for the first (and hopefully last) time in three weeks. I don’t really know what to expect, but I have always done well on standardized tests. Any comments on the kinds of questions asked, or tips for preparing?

I am close to graduating with a BA in English literature; I have high reading and writing skills, but my math is pretty rusty (I have only studied up to basic Statistics). I want to apply to a graduate program in Information Science.

PostHeaderIcon Can you name a few good US universities that do not require a GRE score for an M.S. program?

I could not manage to get a passport despite applying several times last year, so I missed out on writing the GRE. Now I’m likely to get my passport soon and I’m interested in pursuing an M.S. course in any area of mechanical engineering. My English is quite good and I am confident that I can get a good score in IELTS/TOEFL. Any help/suggestions are highly appreciated.

PostHeaderIcon How good of a PhD finance program can I get into?

I have a 3.7 undergraduate and 4.0 graduate gpa both in math from a top 300 University.
My GRE is a 570 verbal and 800 quantitative.
I have have 6 yrs of part time work experience tutoring and several econ elective course.
I also have some as some undergraduate and graduate research though unpublished.
I was just trying to weigh my options so any insight would be helpful.
It is probably closer to the 300 mark I would imagine. It is Georgia Southern University.

PostHeaderIcon Can someone please explain this to me (improper fractions and addition)?

I am a senior in college, psychology major. I haven’t taken a math course in 4 years and it’s just not my cup of tea. I am studying for my GRE’s and I am completely STUMBLED on something that is probably very simple.

How does -3 + 1/3 equal -2 2/3?

How did we get that?

Thank you so much to anyone who can dumb this down for me!
Okay. I understand up until -8/3, but I don’t understand where the 6 and 2′s come from?

PostHeaderIcon can I be a teacher with a misdemeanor ?

I have a shoplifting misdemeanor charge on my background. This happen about a year ago when I was having a really hard time in my life. I completed probation, forty hours of community service and an alternative shoplifters course as well as repaid the company the amount they asked for, for the items I stole. I felt really horrible and guilty about stealing. I am currently trying to get the charge expunged. However I trying to getting into graduate school. I have already applied to take the GRE. I already have my B.A in English. So therefore, my question is how will having this misdemeanor affect me getting into graduate school to get my Master in Arts in teaching with initial certification?

PostHeaderIcon How do you let a sex partner down gentle when you just can't keep having sex with them?

About four months ago, I meant the most wonderful person in my life. They were caring, loving, kind and just all around great. Lightbulb was everything I wanted in a partner.

Yeah, it started out sweet and all. We wrote each other little love letters and sent each other little gifts. Then we naturally moved on to dating and seeing each other more and more. It was wonderful, and I gre to love the lightbulb very much. Then we moved in together, and well, being that close and personal to each other sort of took it’s course.

Last weekend we decided to have sex with each other for the first time. During the love making, I cut my penis pretty badly. I applied simple medical aid to it and it stopped the bleeding and is healing up rather nicely. We haven’t made love again since, but tonight Lightbulb is going on a rather long trip and has sort of been ‘frisky’ lately, so I fear for tonight.

My penis has just really started to heal and while I love lightbulb very much, I don’t know how to break it to them that we just can’t keep having sex like this, I mean, before long I wont have anything to have sex with!

I want to try to make this better, or let lightbulb down gently… hopefully without negativally effecting our relationship too much. Any tips or ideas of how to deal with a horny lightbulb?

PostHeaderIcon graduate university help!!!!?

hi all i’m an international student from india. my gre was 1300 (800 + 500) and toefl was 107. i had applied to 4 universities for MS in computer science- U PENN, JHU, NYU and U PITT.

i had pretty strong SOP with 4 fairly strong LOR’s from 3 professors and a company i had my training in. the problem with my profile was my acads. i only had a gpa of around 3.2/4. (i say around coz in my university we follow the percentage system in every course)

so the problem is that now i have received a reject from U PENN and the rest universities are saying that they’ll take around 2 weeks for the decision. but now my idiotic decision of applying to 4 universities is biting my a$$. so is there any other university which has admission open even now???
(i’m applying to north eastern univ tomorrow morning)… plz plz let me know any university or guidance. i understand there is no spoon feeding here but i have been so tense for the past few days that i cant see any hope….

also if not possible,

PostHeaderIcon Is a GRE score of 950 (verbal/quant) to low to get into Physicians Assistance school?

I am applying to Physicians Assistance school and just took my GRE with a combined score of 950 on the verbal/quantitative section. I know I am not a good standardized test taker. My undergrad GPA was 3.7, and my references and position statement are strong. Is this test score competitve? Should I try to take the exam again?

PostHeaderIcon Studying Abroad in Korea: Weighing Pros and Cons??? Help!?

I plan on doing a year long (2011-2012) study at Korea University in Seoul, S.K through an ISEP program for my senior year of college. My focus of study is in "Environmental Economic Policy", basically a conglomerate of statistics, business, and environmental sciences. At this point, I have done my application, most of my course approvals, considering scholarships, and just waiting for the acceptance results. Basically my parents are saying that my degree would be useless if I end up graduating over there since the 30 some credits would not be factored into my GPA. I will still be getting my degree from my home university though.

Pros:::
- Lots of networking
- Possibly graduating on time
- Gaining an alternative view of their methods in my field
- Expanding my horizons

Cons:::
- Unsupported by parents (will need at least half of costs covered through scholarships/financial aid)
- Language barrier (learning Korean right now)
- Possibly extending my graduation time
- Missing GRE’s
- Unable to look for jobs in the US

I have been to Korea before this past winter break and loved it so much I decided I wanted to go back this time for an academic experience, etc. Basically, I’d like some feedback from you guys to weigh my options for my final decision.

PostHeaderIcon How soon after test prep class should I take the GRE exam?

I am going to take a test prep class for the GRE revised exam, however I don’t know how long I should wait after the class ends to take the test. My class doesn’t start until July, so I can’t ask the instructor or anything right now but I do want to register for the test now. So how long should I wait??? Thanks!!!

PostHeaderIcon Graduating with my bachelor’s this spring – not sure where to go for school after this?

Ok, I have been to my school’s career counseling center, and talked to my 3 favorite teachers (who each then directed me to additional faculty), and I simply cannot seem to get the help i need looking at future school/careers.

In short, the career counselor wouldn’t shush about doing "what I love…", and i finally had to wear him down and make him realize that there is a bit of pragmatism involved in my future haha. I took all the career tests, and they say (and i generally agree) that I’m very analytical but also empathetic and I would be idea for careers in law and business.

A bit about me:
-23 years old
-Graduating with a Bachelor of the Arts in Psychology this year
-3.7 GPA, and I’m a good test taker (would do well in GRE/GMAT I assume, if going to Law I would need to take classes on the LSAT)
-When asked to make a list of what I want out of life (what I want my career to provide me with), the list is simply topped with: MONEY. It’s not as plainly materialistic as all that, but the life I want to live requires money. First of all, I want horses (have ridden and shown other people’s horses since I was a youngin’), and I want to be financially very stable, nice house, not have to worry about vet bills for my horses, etc.

So, I went out to talk to some facutly I know at my school and they have all thrown me in about 3 different directions each, so I’m posting here to see if anyone has some answer/solutions to my future haha.
The problem is, I either get the lecture of "do what you love" (which is BS, i can’t make money with horses – not the way I want anyway), or I get told vague ideas of what to do with minimal insight. For instance, I talk to an accounting teacher today who has his law degree, who struck it rich as an accountant in the 80s and is a real hard-a**, and he basically told me I’d be stupid to go to law school (too much money, won’t necessarily get a job when I come out), and that my strengths don’t play well to an MBA. And of course i’ve heard plenty of "you’ll be fine – you’ll do great in Business/Law school and be successful", but there is at least some truth to what this man said today…

So my question is, what experiences have you answerers had in Law or Business? I’m rather turned off of law after talking to this person today, but you never know. If going into business, my main perrogative is money, and I’m not tremendously mathematically inclined (I can pass the classes, but not excel), so I was recommended to look at the health care field.

Does anyone have a Masters in Health Care Admin? Or an MBA with an emphasis on Health Care?

thanks, sorry if I rambled, it’s a long story, but your input would be appreciated!
I should have mentioned this, sorry!, but I’m not at all interested in continuing with Psychology. The amount of school vs. money made does not appeal to me. I have considered all areas of work in the psychological field from psychiatry to social work to research, and none seem to offer what i’m looking for. thanks though :)

PostHeaderIcon thinking of a major career shift,is it possible?

I am currently a final year computer science engineering student.but in the past 3 years i realized that that this is not my true calling. Now I am thinking of changing my career to english literature.I indulged myself in english language literature from various genres, periods and regions and i know that i will enjoy a more satisfied and fulfilled life in this stream even if it is less lucrative. What i want to know is how dow i make the shift?I want to pursue a university course so what steps should i be taking now?i wrote my gre and got 1350–will it be of any help? as a comp sci student i was an average student with decent credentials so will be guaranteed a decent job but i am really struggling to stay motivated in this field. My interest and natural talent in english literature has been evident since my childhood but due to circumstances and familial pressures had to opt for engineering in my college.(plz dont give me that u shud’ve rap,ive already had enough of that)

PostHeaderIcon gpa around 2 and thinking of grad school in US. am i nuts?

first of all, hats off to those in NUS, Singapore who gets CAP 4 or 5 ( GPA 3 or 4). i don’t know how they are doing it.
But I can barely make it above 2.
I am studying in engineering faculty of national university of singapore and in my second year now. my gpa or what they call ‘CAP’ (cumulative average point) here is just above 2. i still have 2 years to improve my gpa but here it’s really hard to raise your gpa but very easy to lower it because each semester throughout the 4 year course, weigh equally unlike in other universities or other countries where the later years count more towards the final GPA calculation.
so if you know any uni in US which can accept an international student like me to their science or health admin master program ( afte my uni experience here, i am no longer bent on getting a phD and be an academic all my life)
i would be very happy to hear about it. I don’t have high hope to get into UPenn or Carnegie Mellon with my GPA. but is it possible for me to get into 3rd and 4th tier uni?
i am quite certain that the highest i can bring my gpa score is 2.5. And i would have 3 year work experience by the time i apply grad school cos it’s my bond here to serve 3 years in singapore after graduation for taking government grant.
But i am set on going somewhere after my time here cos’ i love travelling and experience new things like student life.
I will try to score well on my GRE but i think GPA counts alot in the application too. and will i still be able to financial assistance like loans, teaching assistant ship or any other category even if i get into 3rd or 4th tier uni?
I had a perfect academic history until i arrived in NUS.
Like i got all As in my A levels which i finished in UK but i just lost it in NUS. but does that matter to the admission committe? please share your experience if you have any.
hi pat. thanks for your info.
in UK, some universities do not count the first year at all but only the last 2 years or so.
i guess NUS follows US system then.
I have been looking at many grad school websites and most of them ask for gpa 3 or better and i am quite discouraged since i dont have the minimum requirement.

PostHeaderIcon I want to study in Canada. What is the minimum academic requirement to apply to a decent university?

I have done my Bachelor of Engineering in Computers from Mumbai University with an aggregate of 53 . I am looking to apply for an MS course in Aug 2010 in Computer Science. I really need to know if I will be able to get through to a nice university. I plan to give my GRE and TOEFL/ IELTS in Nov and that won’t be a problem at all. It’s just that I think my academics do not reflect my true potential and I’m just worried I will miss out on a top – notch university.
I’d also appreciate it if anybody can give me an idea about the job prospects in Canada after I complete my Masters.

PostHeaderIcon Are preparatory classes required to take the revised GRE?

I plan to enroll for a masters degree in 2012, and just discovered that the GRE pattern has been revised. I suck at the math and quant part, i know there are loads of books and guides regarding GRE, but im honestly confused about whether to study on my own or join one of those expensive classes. What do you guys think?
Also, I plan to do my masters in humanities, so do i need to have a brilliant score in math or do they look at the over-all score? HELP!!!

PostHeaderIcon Masters in English programs?

What are some good MA in English programs?

I am truly in crisis about where to apply to and more importantly, where I QUALIFY. I REALLY want to go to Cali but all the UC’s deadlines have passed or don’t have my program. Here are my stats if anyone could maybe help me, it would be EXTREMELY appreciated!!

I graduated from Stony Brook University (SUNY) a year early with a double major in Sociology and Religious Studies (weird, I know). I was editor of my HS newspaper but did not write in college due to my heavy course load. I have studied abroad, made Dean’s List for many semesters and have several extracurricular activities from my undegrad years (I was an RA, won campus awards, and served on eboard for my sorority).

Age: 21 (graduated 1 year early)
GPA: 3.02 ( I was a science major my first year..bad move, but made Dean’s list for successive semesters, have a 3.7 and 3.5 GPA’s in my majors)
GRE: still haven’t taken it but my base score with no studying for verbal was around 550.
Experience: Internship for Vogue Magazine for about a month for fashion week (Editorial department), work experience, good recommendations.

I have no guidance on where to apply or anything. I would want to get my MA in English and teach High School English. I would also like to earn my PhD following my Masters. Thanks SO much everyone! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Fatima: what do you mean NC colleges? (thanks for the input everyone!)

PostHeaderIcon how can I transfer to any pharmcy school in CA? I am studying under gratuate of life science now?

I am a Taiwanese, have permanent resident card and also a CA’s resident. Now I am studying life science in Taiwan, national central university(www.NCU.edu.tw). In the future I want to study pharmacy in CA. but now I have only little information about this. I have some questions.
1. I decide to finish my course of life science in Taiwan first. can I just transfer to pharmacy in any college’s under graduate after I graduate? If cant, what should I do? I mean any test like TOEFL or PCAT or GRE?
I think life science is similiar to pharmacy.
2. I am a resident of CA now. I have no ideal where or how to apply transfer? Is there any website I can visit? And does the fee cheaper as a resident?
3. What does people do after gratuate from pharmacy? Got a liscence and work in drog store?

PostHeaderIcon Does the GRE test prep course work?

I was looking into the Princeton Review course and it is so expensive! Was wondering if it actually improves your score. What is better a tutor or a course? Which is harder on the math GRE or GMAT?

PostHeaderIcon How to manage time between Academics and Job? Please, please help?

SCHEDULE: Part time Job 9am-2pm (3-4 days per week), Study at least 3hrs/day for Graduate Record Exam (GRE in month and a half), Summer course 2.5 hrs/day(6 big books in a month). (After GRE: rewrite undergrad thesis and start applications for grad school.

When working = 9-2(work), 2-3(shower+lunch), 3-6(GRE), 6-7(dinner) 7-9:30(Summer course) 9:31(contemplate suicide)

The GRE should be my main priority as it is a huge investment for my future because it could ultimately affect my whole career in terms of where I get my education. I want to quit my job but my parents want me to keep it because I committed and should be earning summer money. Any advice on this conundrum?
