grad school admission- continuing ed? trying too hard?

Hi and welcome to my blog,
I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!
So I am cleaning up my portfolio for grad school applications, took a couple more grad level courses locally and scored an A and a B+. Took the GRE subject test, and GRE General. I still think, that although I have a masters in the major I want to earn a PhD in, that my undergrad record with a C average will STILL close the doors on the top programs I want to go to. Also, I don’t think I scored so hot on the subject test. And, I had to take the couple of courses recently since in my masters program I didn’t reconcile my lack of preparation back then, and hence scored some B-s in my masters program.
So, if I don’t get into a top program that I would like to go to, do people think that simply going to the program I want to earn a PhD in and taking some more courses and getting A’s in them and recommendations is a viable way to get into that program? Or would I be trying too hard? Or even worse potentially setting myself up for a possible rejection?
Demographic Transition Model Question?
So I’ve always wondered why there is no AP course in Geography, why there is no SAT II in Geography, or no GRE subject test in Geography. The truth is, it is not a major part of curricula here in the states. Just to see how many people actually know:
1) Which of the following is not a characteristic of Stage II in the Demographic Transition Model?
a) a decline in the crude death rate
b) an increase in the population growth rate
c) advances in food safety and health care
d) a decline in the crude birth rate
2) A fall line is:
a) The boundary between two different ecosystems
b) The boundary between two tectonic plates
c) The boundary between rolling hills and alluvial plains
d) The border of two countries that are not on good terms
3) Which of the following is an archipelago nation?
a) New Caledonia
b) Brunei
c) Sao Tome and Principe
d) Madagascar
4) What is the most populated U.S. state capital?
a) Boston, Massachusetts
b) San Francisco, California
c) Denver, Colorado
d) Phoeniz, Arizona
e) Atlanta, Georgia
Tell me if you guys think these would go well on an SAT II for Geography!!
How much will a poor grade in a first calculus course hinder an overall very strong math PhD applicant?
How much will a grade of C+ in a calculus I course (summer course; poor prof, lazy freshman syndrome), followed by straight A’s in an advanced program of study (linear algebra, calc II and III, analysis, abstract algebra, topology, combinatorics, algebraic topology, graph theory, discrete math, algebraic geometry) effect overall admissibility to top mathematics PhD programs? I am considering applying to Harvard, Cornell, UChicago, MIT, Caltech, Michigan, Berkeley, UCLA, Notre Dame, Carnegie-Mellon, Yale, Brown, Penn, Minnesota, Maryland and Dartmouth.
What if I receive an 800+ on my GRE subject test (this is all very speculative) and graduate with a 3.9+//3.7 overall (transfer student)?
Should I get my hopes up for any of these programs, despite a poor first math course my freshman year? Thanks!
Top 50 schools for Theoretical Physics?
I am B.E(ECE-2006 pass-out) graduate working in MNC in India. I am much inspired to have my higher studies in Theoretical Physics. I like to execute my desire in the coming academic year(Fall2008). But i missed to register GRE Subject Test(Physics) before deadline (The only option is to write GRE Subject Test (Physics) on April 12). I am likely going to write GRE General and TOEFL exams soon. I wish to know Top 50 schools for Theoretical physics(around the world)(Philosophy oriented). Is there any way to enter into such schools in coming academic year. I have greater interest in Physics and requiring oppurtunities to know the philosophy of physics very shorly..please guide me to a better tomorrow.
Should I Take The GRE Math Subject Test?
Hello,
I got my bachelor’s of mathematics last year and I’m taking a year off this year to travel a bit before going to do my master’s (I’m hoping to enroll in engineering). Anyway, I took the GRE General test and my results were not spectacular (470 verbal, 740 math). I’m signed up to take the math subject test on the 7th of november, but I’m debating on whether I should or not.
Since I’m taking a year off, I’m not doing any math, and I haven’t had access to any of my books or notes or anything. And I guess being in Korea learning Korean, I haven’t been studying much.
I’m primarily looking at schools in Texas since they seem to be within my reach (california universities are out of my reach I think), and those I’ve looked at so far do not require the Subject test, just the general. But I would not like to be disadvantaged or to see admission refused to a certain university because I didn’t take the GRE Subject test.
I’ve been gathering my documents and stuff and I’m about to apply, so I don’t know if there will be schools that I will want to apply to that will require the GRE Subject test. It’s possible that I apply to 4 or 5 schools.
Seeing that it’s been a few months since I’ve done any math, and since I’ve not had access to my books, do you think it’s worth taking the test? I’m afraid that if I do take it, it just ends up hurting me because of poor results.
I need advice…
By guessing, I mean just choosing random answers without really looking at the questions.
Yes, if I didn’t get 800 on the math part, it’s because I didn’t pace myself well and ended up guessing on the last few questions because I ran out of time.

What is the GRE subject test and do I have to take it?
I see they have eight subject tests, but the subject I want to do a Ph.D in (history) is not there. So, does that mean I don’t have to take the GRE subject test to get into grad school. I only have to take the general GRE? Please explain…
