PostHeaderIcon Hesitant about applying to graduate school?

Looking for info on gre preparation classes, gre preparation courses, gre test course and more?

Hi and welcome to my blog,

I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!

Yeah that’s right. I’m really avoiding the whole situation I guess because I’m afraid I wont get in…mainly because I’m terrible at writing standardized tests and therefore my GRE scores would probably be horrible. In fact, I took one of those 4 day prep courses recently, then took a practice tests and got an extremely LOW score. Anyway, I have a 3.7 gpa, and I can get some really good recommendation letters, but it’s the GRE crap that’s getting to me. Should I just apply to grad schools in Canada (since they don’t require the GRE)? Or should I just forget about grad school altogether? OR should I just hope that the grad schools wont care about my crappy scores?

PostHeaderIcon how can I get rankings of US universities offering MS courses in VLSI,embedded systems or microelectronics?

I want to know which university is the best in each of the fields mentioned above.I would also like to know the GRE scores that each of these universities require.

PostHeaderIcon What are chances of acceptance?

I am applying to the Master’s program in Communication Disorders at Georgia State University in order to become a speech language pathologist. The program website said they typically have around 80 applicants and accept around 20 every year. I exceed the average GPA (I have a 3.7) and GRE scores for admitted applicants, and should have good letters of recommendation. I did my undergrad in cognitive linguistics and had nearly a 4.0 in my major courses. Does anyone have experience applying to graduate programs in this field? Should I have any trouble being accepted?

PostHeaderIcon being punished for not taking the easy way out?

i was looking at grad school admissions, and i think a lot of them put too much focus on cumulative undergraduate gpa over than gpa for the pre-requisite courses and gre scores. i have a higher gpa than my friends in the prerequisite courses for the programs we’re applying too, and a much higher GRE. but my overall cumulative is lower than theirs because i used biochemistry as a undergrad major, and they chose psychology. biochem prepared me better as seen in GRE scores, but has much more difficult course work, with class averages being in the c and d range! vs psychology courses where almost everybody in the class can do well with minimum effort and the class average is A’s or B’s! do you ever feel like you’re being punished for taking the harder road? =[

PostHeaderIcon Is there any way I can get into grad school with a 2.3? How?

Can I take up some extra courses or something? Would they accept me with acceptable GRE scores?

PostHeaderIcon Should I go straight to Graduate School, or wait?

I am graduating with a bachelor’s in psychology this Spring 2011. I intend on going to graduate school to obtain a Doctorate and practice counseling and potentially teach at a university in the future.

I am only 19 years old (I skipped a couple grades) and I feel like I am being rushed. I have taken the GRE and I am not too happy with my results. My GPA is excellent; however, I know most graduate schools require a minimum GRE score, and unfortunately, mine isn’t very adequate.

I am not sure whether I should graduate undergrad, and then go immediately on to graduate school for my master’s, but not have my heart set on the school. Or, I will graduate, and then enroll in a GRE prep course, while working, and hopefully bring my GRE scores up greatly, and then apply to more desirable schools.

Graduation is rapidly approaching, and since I don’t have my heart fully set on a specific school(s), I feel like it is foolish to rack up my loans by attending graduate school that isn’t my first choice. Unfortunately, I feel like a loser by taking time off school.

PostHeaderIcon What path should I take to get into MIT’s graduate programme for mathematics?

I chose to attend BYU, Provo, for my undergraduate studies and will start in the fall of this year (2008). (As a member of the LDS Church, I do intend to serve a full-time mission for two years when I turn nineteen, which will be in August 2009, after the first year of college.) I have chosen to pursue a double major in mathematics and Chinese, but, of course, that can easily be changed. Getting into MIT’s graduate mathematics programme is a major goal for me, and I was wondering what besides a 4.0 and perfect or near-perfect GRE scores would be necessary to increase my chances of getting in as much as possible. I’ve heard something of a Putnam test. What competitions can I participate in as an undergraduate mathematics major? Also, how do undergraduate assistantships work? I’ve heard that’s how you get good letters of recommendation, but I have no idea what they are or how they work. Any advice would be extremely appreciated. Thank you so much for reading this!

PostHeaderIcon Which Chemistry programs can I get into with my GRE scores?

I just graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences degree from a Florida university. I also completed an Honors Thesis and graduated from the Honors College. I am interested in pursuing a graduate degree in Chemistry. For now, I want to be admitted to a Masters in Chemistry program, and from there, I can work on my Doctoral degree. I am part of two Honors society and was listed on the Chemistry Honor Roll in one semester. I received Dean’s List or Chancellor’s List in nearly every semester of college. My overall GPA is 3.87, my institution GPA is 3.92, and my GPA within chemistry courses (34 credit hours) is 3.98. Other than Honors Thesis, I don’t have much research experience.

I recently took the GRE and I am extremely worried about my GRE scores. My Verbal score is 400 and my Quantitative score is 600. Analytical writing score I pending. Overall, I don’t think I did so well, as it is not as high, as 600V or 700Q like I wanted. I’m afraid that my GRE scores are low compared to other students who have scored higher. I do not want to take the GRE again.

My goal is to enter a decent, well-known university, not those fancy and exceptional universities like Princeton or Yale. I was wondering if you can recommend me any decent schools with good chemistry programs based on my GRE scores. Do you think I have a chance of getting accepted to these schools? I prefer to attend a university in Florida, but you can also list any schools outside Florida.

Thanks.

PostHeaderIcon 1 month to go before GRE exam…?

I will be honest here, i have 1 month to go for GRE and today was my first day of looking at the GRE book. What is the best way of studying the exam? i am aiming for around 1200+

thanks.

1) Are the GRE scores available immediately after the exam? i.e. math and verbal?

PostHeaderIcon GRE Score percentiles?

How much importance is placed on percentiles on the GRE when applying to an undergraduate institution? I scored really well on the verbal, in the 85%. But the math, and for some reason I can’t explain the writing were really, really bad. I know the math because I didn’t study at all for the math, but the writing has just blown me out of the water. However, my references are really good and I know for a fact that two of the professors wrote about what a GOOD writer I am and how I write better than graduate students in the program in 200/300 level courses. Can references make up for bad GRE scores, and do I need to explain it away in my personal statement. Personally I think standardized tests are poor indicators of academic potential. I have an excellent academic record, lots of honors, great references, but bad GRE (math and writing for some odd reason) scores. What do I do?
that should be when applying to a graduate school
that should be when applying to a graduate school

PostHeaderIcon Chances of getting into PhD programs…GRE scores, gpa, etc…?

I am applying to several Cognitive PhD and Sensation and Perception PhD programs. My gpa is lower than I would like: for December 15th deadlines it will be entered as a 3.32 and for deadlines after December 15th it will be a 3.48. Unfortunately, I was extremely unmotivated my first two years of school and did not do well (2.82). However, my last three semesters I have had gpas of 3.65, 3.91 and 4.0. My gpa within psychology is a 3.75 and my upper level course (3000 and 4000) level is a 3.92.

I do not have my writing score from the GRE yet, but I received a 670 on the verbal and a 740 on the math for a total of 1410.

I was just curious as to whether or not my GRE scores could compensate for my GPA. Most programs that I am applying to have a MEAN Gpa of 3.5 and a MEAN GRE of 1200. So I am below on one, higher on the other.

Also, among psychology PhD’s my scores put me in the 96th percentile for both math and verbal.

Obviously I am just nervous about my Gpa. Thanks!

PostHeaderIcon Test Anxiety with the GRE?

I am on the verge of taking the GRE for the third time this coming December. I just took it today for the second time and I bombed it severely more so than I did the first time. I am currently applying to doctoral programs (one in which I have applied a first time and was denied due to my scores) I have been studying with the Kaplan book, but I cannot afford to take the test prep course. I study fine at home, but when I go to take the test everything blanks and the words become more difficult to read and understand. I then become frustrated. I do not know what to do. All prep courses cost entirely too much, and I greatly desire to enroll in my I/O Psychology programs of choice. Does anyone know of a program that does not heavily weigh GRE scores as this is my only week point?

PostHeaderIcon I'm having serious trouble with the GRE….will a low score affect my chance of getting accepted?

Applying to graduate school in a social sciences-related degree and one of the components of the application are GRE scores.

I am an international student so I did not need to take the SAT’s when I went to college and so the whole idea of "standarized testing" is brand new to me. This GRE is killing me. I spent over a thousand dollars on a prep course and I still have a low score on the practice tests.
My overall GPA is 3.6 and I have strong letters of recommendation and a personal statement that both facutly members called "outstanding". I also at the undergraduate level presented at a national conference. Do you think a GRE score that is low will hurt?
My average scores on practice tests are:
AW: no idea
V: 350
Q: 250

PostHeaderIcon How early should I schedule for my GRE, and should I worry about the scores being separate from my application?

1. I want to become a literature professor, so of course I plan on taking the general GRE and the English subject GRE. I want to take them in August or September, because I want to have all of my grad school applications sent out before Christmas rolls around.

The thing is, the GRE is pretty pricey, and I won’t have 0 saved up to pay for the two tests until July-ish. If I schedule in July, will I be able to take the tests as early as August/September? (I’m assuming you pay for the tests when you schedule.)

2. I know you have to write the school’s code down, and they’ll send your GRE scores to the school. That means the scores will be separate from my letters of recommendation, my transcripts, my writing samples…

Will the schools put two and two together and look at my application as a whole? Should I get a copy of my GRE scores for myself and send them along? I just don’t want these universities to think I have an incomplete application!

PostHeaderIcon GRE Scores and phd in art history?

I’m in the process of applying for phd programs in art history. I graduated 4 years ago with a strong GPA (about 3.5 overall) BA in History and German with art history classes and I want to attend a competitive program. I met with some old profs lately and have been guided to yale, delaware, nyu and rutgers. I took the GRE last week and i’m not really able to discern if my scores are competitive (and i really don’t want to go through that test again!)
I’m wondering if my gre scores are competitive… obviously I doon’t have my writing samples scored yet but I feel confident that I will score high in them. Anyway, my verbal/math scores were 610/630, respectively. Any suggestions, I haven’t been able to find anything out on my own???

I really appreciate it!
just got my writing score back, which was 5.0
graduated from university of michigan, with a BA in History and a BA in German.
studied in Germany 2001-2002, fluent in german and two semester of french and applying for an intensive latin summer course (as medieval art history is my dream)

thanks for the advice so far!

PostHeaderIcon Is GRE needed for doing PG in abroad?

I am in my final year I.T. Engineering course, pursuing it from India. Is GRE scores needed if I want to seek PG (MS or MBA) in abroad? Is TOEFL compulsory with that?Is there any other option? What is the total expenses to appear for these exams? Is self preparation enough for these? How long does it take to get fully prepared? When can we appear for it.

PostHeaderIcon Tulane University GRE score for PhD in International Development?

Does anyone know the acceptable range of GRE scores Tulane will accept for their PhD in International Development? Of course, they suggest 1200 but Tulane claims to be flexible so I’d like to know how flexible.

PostHeaderIcon Please tell me the universities in Indiana, where no GRE score is required for PG courses?

PostHeaderIcon How long did u study for the GRE? Was the real exam hard?

What were the minimum GRE scores that the grad schools u wanted to apply required?

PostHeaderIcon What is considered a good overall GRE score?

I know it’s probably a very subjective question, but i recently took the GRE exam and received a 560 for verbal and 750 for quant. I feel comfortable with my quantitative score, however, my verbal score is a lot lower. The overall score is 1310, would anyone recommend that I retake the GRE?
Thanks in advance.
Also, can anyone tell me from experience how long they had to wait for the GRE scores to be mailed to them? The computer-based version please. Thanks.
