I recently took the GRE. I got a 600 on the verbal, 560 on the quantitative and a 5.5 on the writing portion. Unlike most other people posting on here, my verbal skills are better than my math. Here’s my question: I want to apply for the Master’s in Counseling Psychology program at a local public university in MD. Do you think my scores are good enough? They only take about 1 in 5 people who apply. Of course, other factors are considered: personal statement, letters of recommendation, etc. My undergrad overall GPA was 3.42. Just thought I would throw this question out there before I waste to apply. Thanks for any help!
Thanks for all of the advice! My school of choice states only "acceptable performance" is required for the GRE. I applied as non-degree seeking last year, but they wouldn’t let me sign up for relevant classes (limited them to degree seeking only). Guess that defeated the purpose of trying to take classes and then getting them to transfer! In any case, I will apply and cross my fingers. Thanks again!

I need to take the GRE to get into graduate school. How hard is it? What do I need to study? Are there any ways you can suggest to prepare other than the Kaplan study guides (I already have those)?

I don’t know how similar the two tests are, but I was thinking I could just sign up for a Princeton Review or a Kaplan course for the MCAT and that might also prepare me for the GRE. The courses are very expensive.

Also, if you recommend that I take a prep class for both tests, could I take them at the same time?

Do you think it is necessary to take both tests? My situation is difficult because I plan on going into the Peace Corps before I go to graduate or medical school, and I’m not sure which I want to do at this point, but I want to take the tests before I go into the Peace Corps, even if I have to take them again later.

Any help you could give me is greatly appreciated, I can’t find information about this anywhere!

I am signed up to take a GRE prep course in March. I am in favor of the standardized test like the SAT and such but I really don’t agree with the weight that the GRE holds when applying for graduate school. Think about it. Most go to college and major in ONE thing. For me, I was a Public Relations major. I was required to take only 3 hours worth of math. Yet, I have to do an entire section of math on the GRE and it isn’t all basic math either. Plus, the vocabulary section is crap. It asks you for definitions of words that are not commonly used. Seriously, the meanings of some of those words are outdated and NOBODY uses them in the form that is being asked. If we have to take the exam, fine, but schools shouldn’t put the bulk of their decision on the score. They need to look at all factors like GPA, etc.It all needs to be balanced equally. I was good enough to get into college and graduate but the GRE is trying make us prove we are good enough to keep going? What do you guys think?

I need to sharpen up my points in the GRE so i want to find a place that is available for preparing us for the GRE. I heard a place called Testmasters that has a GRE course but on the website it says 899$ per full course. Is this true? and is there any other places you would recommend for it?
thanks

I am an International Affairs/Poli Sci double major (Hist minor, because why the hell not?) and I’ll actually be finished with all my courses and credits a semester early (Spring 2011 as opposed to Fall 2012).

My question is what timeline should I follow to take the GRE? I plan on going off to grad school to continue studying International Affairs.

Thanks! If I left out important details, let me know.

I’m a junior majoring in Speech Pathology and Audiology. I want to take the GRE this year, but I don’t know when i’ll have time to study hard for it. I’m taking 18 hrs this semester and I plan on taking 6 hrs in the summer, 18 hrs in the fall. For those of you that have taken the GRE while you were completing your undergrad, how did you study for the exam while studying for your undergrad courses?

On the physics gre ets guide, they list a series of mathematics areas i have to be very familiar with:

boundary value problems
differential equations
vector algebra
complex analysis

i really don’t want to spend my time re-reading entire math text books when i’m studying for the physics gre. So can someone tell me what aspects of these subjects i need to know?

if you have any other advice, feel free to relay it as well..i could use all the help i can get!

thanks

Can anyone give me advice on the math section of the GRE? I am horrid at math, and the best score I’ve gotten out of the three times I’ve taken the GRE is a 370. I’ve tried Princeton Review (online course and book), Kaplan’s review, and many other GRE books. I don’t know what to do but I retake the exam on the 29th of Jan. Any quick tips or helpful ideas are welcome :) Thanks!

an indian friend of mine is an extremely good test taker. She scored 2220/2400 in GRE. She has lived in the US for like 8 yrs but still has a slight accent. She would like to tutor (private as well as classroom sessions) for GRE prep courses but is a little apprehensive about her accent. I say she should give it a shot see how it turns out. What do y’all think?

I have just a month to prepare, I need to get admitted to a particular course by fall and so have just a month to take the GRE. So i am looking for a site/book which has a list of words that I can learn in this limited time

I will be taking the LSAT and maybe the GRE at the end of the year. The prep courses have very high prices. I know this is important, but price tags up to 00 seem ridiculous to me. If you took a course, did it help you? Was it worth the cost? Share your experience, please.

Hey guys, Im currently doing my undergraduate course from The Indian Institute of Technology. Id like some help regarding when i should start preparations for say, GRE, GMAT, CAT etc. People say i should start preparing well in advance. And moreover, what other prerequisites would i need, that i will have to obtain in the upcoming years at IIT, to gain admission into a reputed university abroad. Or are the test scores sufficient for entrance? Pl guys, these questions have been bugging me for some time now and id love your help.

I’m thinking of purchasing a few study guides online to study for the GRE. I’m wondering if it would be alright to purchase older editions of study guides from a few years ago. Were there any changes to the test that would deter me from buying an older edition? How far back can I go?

Thanks for your help.

Has anyone taken or knows someone who has taken a Kaplan program or used an equivalent program to prepare for the GRE? Which course did you take: Instructor-led or online self-study? Did you feel it prepared you better than studying on your own would have? Do you feel its benefits were worth the cost to enroll? Thanks so much!
