PostHeaderIcon How hard is the General GRE exam?

Okay, I am a senior right now and I am planning on going on to graduate school next fall. I would like to achieve a very good score on the general GRE (I don’t have a specific subject test to take because I am a history major). I just want to know how hard you found it in your personal experience.

p.s. please don’t relate it to the SATs because I have never taken that test, or the ACT.

PostHeaderIcon I wish to study in the USA…but how?

I am soon completing my tenth grade and I wish to pursue my dream of becomming a space scientist, by studying in the USA, and then joining NASA.
I presently study in India, and have heard a lot about the GRE and TOEFL tests, but I still feel that I am in the dark about them.
Could anyone tell me what path I need to take from now, to achieve what I want to (such as what courses I need to take, what institutions I may approach and the like)

PostHeaderIcon What career path should I take? Physical Therapy?

Currently I am in a bad situation. I lost my job at Circuit City Inc in 2009 when they went out of business. I enjoyed my job it was not hard to sit behind a desk and approve/deny financing. But I also loved the people that I worked with that is what made the job fun and interesting. So when Circuit city went out of business I decided to fall back on my degree (Bachelors of Science in Psychology). I worked at residential treatment facility with at risk youth and I also worked a group homes. Those jobs were ok. I didn’t really enjoy it. The pay wasn’t that great and I had to deal with bad kids that wanted to try to fight me, curse at me, and harm themselves and others.

So now I am unemployed and I think this a good time to change fields/career path. So I thought about Physical Therapy. From what I understand it is a great field to get into. The only thing is I am nervous that once I apply that the schools are not going to take me in the program because my undergrad GPA is low. I do have to take prerequisite courses (physics, chemistry, anatomy) and take the GRE before entering the program but will it be enough for me to get As in those courses and try to score high on the GRE? Or should I just do something completely different. I don’t know please help me figure this out.

PostHeaderIcon What exam do engineering students have to take for graduate school?

Do engineers just take the GRE, or is there a more specific test (like how medical school has the MCAT) ?

Thanks

PostHeaderIcon Is it possible for a person to clep out of all undergraduate courses and receive his/her degree?

I just started a new job and 2 bosses claim that they both obtained their undergraduate degrees solely by taking the clep exams. One also says that he obtained his Masters degree solely by passing the GRE. I took clep exams for some of my undergraduate courses, but it was my understanding that those exams are only for basic first-year courses and that you can’t clep out of everything — you have to spend some time in the classroom. Re: the GRE, I’ve taken that as a prerequisite for being admitted to graduate school. I’ve never heard of someone being able to take it and be granted a Masters degree based on passing it. Is there something here I don’t know about? (P.S. Both of these bosses are ex-military, if that has anything significance.)

PostHeaderIcon do graduate schools look at your high school GPA?

do they?

I happened to have a not-so-stellar ~ 2.8 GPA in high school because I didn’t like the situation and thus didn’t care too much about it. I did get something like 96-99th percentile ACT/SAT scores back then because I knew that I had high intellectual ability/IQ, I just wasn’t using it for my high school work.

Now I’m about to finish my honors summa cum laude business finance BA degree with all my pre-med pre-reqs (since I wanna be an MD and then get my MBA) with at a college that’s tons better than than the one I started off at (thanks to a transfer). i was able to get impressive scores on the GRE for my BA and MCAT for my pre-med/med school aspirations.

anyway, when applying for med school and then later business school, will those graduate colleges care about the fact that i didn’t do too stellar in high school? (i actually failed a couple courses back in high school :( )

PostHeaderIcon Do I have a chance of getting into a Psy.D. program?

I’m 25, B.S. in biology. Will do well on GREs for sure (lots of studying until I’m ready). Don’t have any extracurriculars (just not that type of person) although I might join a club soon.

From what I hear it is very competitive.. so I really don’t see how I could get in especially since I don’t have a bachelor’s in psychology

Do I have a chance? Especially if:

1) I take a semester of psychology courses, the core ones that most programs seem to require

2) Do extremely well (95% or higher) on the GREs

3) Do well on the psychology GRE by studying for a few years for it

4) Join Psi Chi during the semester I take the psych classes

PostHeaderIcon what should i do after engineering?

PostHeaderIcon What are my chances at a Clinical Psychology Ph. D.?

I will be senoir this coming Fall and I am contemplating giving some doctorate programs a shot. I scored a 1260 (670 V + 590 Q) on the GRE. My quantitative score is disappointing and I might retake it. I currently hold a 4.0 through 107 credit hours – although I guess I am not attending a "prestigious" school. I still have some tough courses left (Human Physiology is one of them) so I might graduate with a 3.9 or so, but hopefully no lower than that…
Here are the schools I am considering for a Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology:
Texas Tech
Sam Houston State
North Texas
SMU
UT Southwestern
LSU

I will help two faculty members with their research project this coming year and I plan on volunteering to get some "real world" clinical experience. I know how competitive Clinical programs can be, so I kind of feel like this might be too little too late… If there are any grad students out there – How much do you fell this will hurt my chances of being admitted?

Thanks!

PostHeaderIcon How is the new GRE exam?

I will be taking the new gre and just wanted to hear how it was? Also if you could tell me what score would I need to get on the new gre for it to equal to 800. Also any tips would be helpful thank you.

PostHeaderIcon How can I sort out my feelings?

I dated guy #1 for 4 years, was engaged for 6 months, and had started planning our wedding. Our relationship had a lot of little problems that were workable, if both people were invested on working on them. I was living at home and commuting to school, and he kept going away to school. I was planning our wedding with my mom while he decided to pursue a graduate degree he couldn’t get a job with (he was putting off getting a job and paying his loans back). Every time we would fight, or I would point out a problem, he would suggest that we will work on it and fix it when he comes home (for good). I got to the point after a year and a half of a long term relationship that he was never going to come home (he still had 1-2 years left of his degree and he was looking for jobs out of the area). I was frustrated, tired of fighting and felt so alone. I was tired of continually putting so much work into a relationship when I felt he wasn’t. So I called of the wedding and broke up with him.

A couple weeks later, I jumped into a rebound relationship with my coworker. I found him attractive but it started mostly as a way for me to try to forget about my ex. Looking back, I know I should have taken the time to be by myself and get over my ex, but hindsight is 20/20. Well this rebound turned into a 5 month relationship. Everything was great between me and guy #2, until 4-5 months in when my ex and I started talking again thinking we could be friends. This confused me to the point where I felt I needed to give guy #1 another chance because I was convinced I had just given up and broken up with him instead of sticking it out and trying to make things work.

Well time #2 with guy #1 was horrible. It started off ok, but guy #1 was very insecure and we started fighting a lot. I was taking a prep course for the GRE and was pouring a lot of time into preparing for this test and working and guy#1 was getting mad that I was not spending enough time with him. As the test was approaching, I felt like guy #1 didn’t respect me and was getting too controlling. I broke up with him again because I was frustrated and tired of fighting (literally every time I talked to him we fought) and I didn’t want to bomb this test and not get into grad school.

A couple weeks later, I got back with guy #2. A couple months later – present time- I realize I need to take time for myself and figure things out.

Currently, I am still in love (not to the same degree as before obviously) with guy#1. We have a history, parts of us work well, parts of him I still love. But so much has happened that I don’t know if I miss him or a 4 year relationship. I don’t know if all the good is worth the bad.

As for guy #2, he is great and I am in love with him as well. THere are things about him that aren’t perfect, but there is plenty with me that isn’t perfect. I feel like I belong with him because we are so compatible. I just don’t know how to get over my ex (guy #1). I understand i need to take time for myself but I don’t know what that means. How do I get to a place where I don’t question my decisions, and how do I figure out that guy #1 (or i guess guy #2) is 100% not the guy for me? I can’t picture my life with out either of them, but I can cut guy #1 out of my life for long periods of time and be ok?

PostHeaderIcon What should I do ? Attend MBA or GRE classes ?

I am currently in 2nd yr of college. I wanna do MBA at last after d completion of the college, but i am also interested in GRE GMAT exams. Should i start studying for MBA from now only ? (By attending coaching classes for MBA aspirants like for CAT exams) or should i attend coaching for GRE GMAT ?

PostHeaderIcon Applying to grad school (English major) – is my GPA good enough?

My cumulative GPA is only 3.81.
I haven’t taken the GRE yet (I’m taking it next month); but my SAT scores were:
Verbal: 800
Writing: 740
Math: 670

I’m taking honors independant study courses, and I know a few profs who will definitely give me good recommendations. How are my chances? How good a school can I reasonably hope to get into?
Oh, thanks. Those answers are SO helpful.

PostHeaderIcon Is UCLA located in a good area?what about the school's engineering course?

i am foreigner ,and my GPA is low,and what about the TOEFL and GRE ,by the way,Purdue is the good choice either?

PostHeaderIcon Should I retake this course?

For nearly my entire college career I’ve been an A student. I just graduated this May with a 3.6 GPA but I have a C- on my transcript from a biology class that was exceptionally difficult for me. I recently did the math and found out that if I had taken this class as a pass/fail my graduating GPA would have been a 3.75.

Because I took overloads each semester last year, I decided to take this coming fall off to study for my GRE and start applying to graduate programs for psych. Being as graduate programs are getting increasingly more competitive, I am wondering if it would be worthwhile to retake the Bio course and make sure I do REALLY well in it this time to try and boost my GPA back up. Any grade I get in it (provided it’s a better grade) will replace my first grade.

I guess I’m wondering if I’m being irrational or if retaking the course would be worthwhile, giving my GPA bit more of a competitive edge (putting all other aspects of my transcript and experience aside).

Thanks for reading through this!

PostHeaderIcon Are there any grad schools accepted 2.5 to 3.0??? Electrical/Computer engineeirng.?

I know Im dumb so don’t harsh.
Are there any schools accepted 2.5 to 3.0???
Please advice some schools with big name in general or in engineering I don’t care.I don’t want to go to state university for my grad.
I think after finishing my undergrad , I will have:
3-straight quarter thesis (research) – that is mandatory in order to graduate with an engineering degree at my school
one internship or co op.
GRE – I don’t know yet but I will try my best
GPA – the highest I can get is 3.2 because I never on the top on my classes ( only 2 to 5 students can get A in each engineering course at my school) but I have a lot of B-, C+ so I may end up 2.8 2.9.
Letter of Recommendation: I will try to get at least three.( Im just planning. What about if I don’t get any?????? )

PostHeaderIcon Please help, How do I control my anger?

I’m taking my gre’s in a few weeks, and I’m very stressed and I don’t know how to keep my emotions under control. Everything and everyone is making me angry. My parents don’t help me; they find some way to irritate me. We’re remodeling our house and lawn and my parents are forcing me to make all the decisions, and oversee everything. I feel responsible because my dad got laid off a couple of years ago, and my mom is the one going to work. I love my parents, but I’m so stressed out and instead of trying to make my environment peaceful they make it stressful. I sometimes lash out at them, and they look at me like I’m crazy. My friends are annoying me. I’ve always been there for them. But lately I don’t have time to hangout and bullshit w. them on the phone because I have to study. So when I do see them or talk to them, all my best friend can talk about is this guy she loves. Of course I want to hear about her relationship and problems, but not the entire time. But allll she talks about is him. Whenever we start talking about something else, she finds someway to go right back to him. I get so angry; I barely talk or see her, and she knows I’m really scared about my test, and all she can f*ing talk about is him and what’s happening. I know I sound selfish. Yes, she has talked to me about my boy problems, but one time I was really upset about this guy, and we only talked about him in 2 convos, whereas for her problems it’s been 3 months. Whenever I talk about how scared I am about my test, she says sry she wishes she could help, and then it goes right back to him. And she doesn’t drive, and has asked me a couple of times if I could drive her to a couple of places; like are u f*ing serious, i have a test in 2 wks! I seriously can’t take it. I don’t know why, I feel like I’m about to explode. Everything is pissing me off. I feel like I have no support, and I’m trying to be independent and do everything myself, but I’m cracking. There’s no one I can just lean on or depend on to do little things for me. How do I control my anger??

PostHeaderIcon As a business undergrad, why do I feel as if I should get an MBA?I don't want to get an MBA!?

I’m interested in going to grad school for architecture. I’m studying the GRE however, every time I review course descriptions or go to a prospective schools graduate page – the letters MBA catches my eye as I should be studying the GMAT? Is it because my work experience is and has always been in a business setting?
I’m just not happy continuing business.
How worth while is getting an MBA? I feel like the probability of getting accepted into an MBA program are much higher because of my experience .. but I shouldn’t base what I want to do on that, should I? I’m also not sure why I’m all the sudden so GD ambivalent, so I turn to you yahoo answers. go!

PostHeaderIcon Why is English given such an important place in competitive exams?

Many colleges and universities conduct entrance exams before admitting students into their institution. I have wondered why a good understanding of the English language is so crucial in these exams.

Take for example the Gradate Recognition Examination (GRE), an exam an aspirant has to clear, before he can start studying in the US.
The exam focuses so much on English comprehension and vocabulary. (Of course, it does include tests of math and reasoning abilities too) But English occupies such a central role.

Also, I notice that the words used to test vocabulary are not so common-place, if not altogether obsolete. Why is it important for me to know words like ‘recant’, ‘upbraid’ and ‘ameliorate’ which I have never till now and probably never will.* A thought comes to mind: How many of these words figure in President Obama’s day-to-day conversations or speeches?
* – abominate, inveterate, orotund, scurrilous, fulmination, distend… the list goes on.

Surely, pulling out a list of vague words from the dictionary, cannot be a test of the applicant’s overall competence. This is especially true in this age of globalisation where the trend is towards simplifying the language more so that people can communicate more easily.

Is it merely to filter the huge number of applications so that only a few manage to qualfy? What other purpose does it solve?

PostHeaderIcon I have GPA around 6. Suggest some universities outside India where i can get admission for masters?

I’m an Indian doing B.E. (Computer Science and Engineering) in India. At the end of my course, I expect my GPA will be between 5 to 6.5, but I have many certificates (see below)

I haven’t yet given my GRE/TOEFL/IELTS, but I hope it won’t be a big hassle for me.

Can some1 plz list the universties in US/UK in which I have chances of getting admission for Masters?

Is it possible in Auckland University (NZ)? If so what about the living cost when compared to US/UK?

Does GPA dominate over other valuable certificates?

ABOUT THE EDUCATION PATTERN HERE (YOU MAY SKIP READING)

To be frank, only 10% (at most) of the professors/lecturers here know what they’re teaching. Others just blabber something in class and go. They do something in the name of teaching, just to get their salary which is between 20000 to 40000 INR.

Examples:
1) My mam who takes "computer networks" says "this computer will hav a port number right?"
Sad that she doesn’t even know that a computer is identifed by something called IP address.

2) There is another fellow who takes "System Software". He is a big a**. He doesn’t even know basic swap program in C. But he has done M.E.!

The correction pattern here is the worst you can see in the world. 42 pages of answer sheet corrected in 1 and half minutes. They don’t read whats written in the answer sheet. If we write something in a different way (but is correct), they don’t even bother to see if its correct or not. They just want us to write whatever is given in the book. I am not used to this in my school (which was far better). Moreover because if incidents like this, I lost interest in academics and this further made me take things easily. I dont have any satisfaction that i learnt something from college.

This extends to most of the colleges here except IIT, NIT, BITS, SSN, Sastra University etc.

LIST OF CERTIFICATES

During my 11th, i did project on "cartography and cryptography". third place in state level and got consolation prize in national level.
Then I did a small presentation at IIT-M in the same topic as I was asked to do.
.
During my second semester, i was a finalist in a software cracking contest conducted by a Madras Inst. of Tech.

I (along with my school teacher) did an online quiz software using php/js/mysql and we hosted it at IIT madras which was used by around 2000 teachers . Well i know it isn’t a big thing but I hav a appreciation letter from Education officer, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, which comes under Ministry of Human Resource Development (India).

I recently won 2nd prize by participating in a Line following Robot contest.

I was a finalist in a Hacking and three other events conducted by SSN College of Engineering.

I’m got a inplant training offer from CEERI. My friend’s dad is working as a scientist there (:P). And for most of the work he does with students, he encourages students to present an IEEE paper based on it. The good thing is that most of such papers get selected for presentatio at IEEE conferences. I hope I’ll be one among those lucky guys to present and IEEE paper.

Apart from all these, I have many participation certificates.
———————————-

ok… so with all these… is it possible for me to do masters abroad?

Let us know if we can add more things you want to know about gre preparation classes, gre preparation courses, gre test course
