PostHeaderIcon gpa around 2 and thinking of grad school in US. am i nuts?

Looking for info on gre preparation classes, gre preparation courses, gre test course and more?

Hi and welcome to my blog,

I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!

first of all, hats off to those in NUS, Singapore who gets CAP 4 or 5 ( GPA 3 or 4). i don’t know how they are doing it.
But I can barely make it above 2.
I am studying in engineering faculty of national university of singapore and in my second year now. my gpa or what they call ‘CAP’ (cumulative average point) here is just above 2. i still have 2 years to improve my gpa but here it’s really hard to raise your gpa but very easy to lower it because each semester throughout the 4 year course, weigh equally unlike in other universities or other countries where the later years count more towards the final GPA calculation.
so if you know any uni in US which can accept an international student like me to their science or health admin master program ( afte my uni experience here, i am no longer bent on getting a phD and be an academic all my life)
i would be very happy to hear about it. I don’t have high hope to get into UPenn or Carnegie Mellon with my GPA. but is it possible for me to get into 3rd and 4th tier uni?
i am quite certain that the highest i can bring my gpa score is 2.5. And i would have 3 year work experience by the time i apply grad school cos it’s my bond here to serve 3 years in singapore after graduation for taking government grant.
But i am set on going somewhere after my time here cos’ i love travelling and experience new things like student life.
I will try to score well on my GRE but i think GPA counts alot in the application too. and will i still be able to financial assistance like loans, teaching assistant ship or any other category even if i get into 3rd or 4th tier uni?
I had a perfect academic history until i arrived in NUS.
Like i got all As in my A levels which i finished in UK but i just lost it in NUS. but does that matter to the admission committe? please share your experience if you have any.
hi pat. thanks for your info.
in UK, some universities do not count the first year at all but only the last 2 years or so.
i guess NUS follows US system then.
I have been looking at many grad school websites and most of them ask for gpa 3 or better and i am quite discouraged since i dont have the minimum requirement.

PostHeaderIcon College classes: Take 18 s.h. and get a class out of the way, or 14 s.h. because it's better for my schedule?

So I’m starting my senior year of college on Monday, and as far as classes left that I need to take before I graduate I have a handful of classes for my majors and then one of the required general education classes, a science course with a lab. As it is now I’m registered for 18 semester hours for the fall, which includes the class I’m taking for the science with lab requirement (which is 4 s.h.). There’s still time to change my schedule though. Now 18 s.h. isn’t a big deal for me, I’ve done it almost every semester, so the difficulty of it isn’t the problem. The two reasons I’m considering not taking the science course this fall, but in the spring instead is:
1) They changed the location of the class I have before the lecture for the science class once a week, and it went from a somewhat long walk, but reasonable, to a very long walk partially uphill. I only have ten minutes to get from one class to another, and I don’t think I can do it. Only being a lecture it’s not a big deal to be late, but at the same time, I don’t like being late to class for any reason.
2) I’ll only have 8 s.h. I’ll have to take in the spring to finish up my majors and really, to graduate too because after fall I’ll have the 120 s.h. needed for graduation. To be a full-time student you need 12 s.h. a semester (and I have to be full-time to keep my scholarships), so taking the 4 s.h. science class would do that, and I’d have a pretty easy schedule for my last semester of college.

But there’s reasons why I think I should just put up with taking the class too. I get As and Bs in my classes, so I’m not really worried about failing the science class even if science isn’t my strong suit, but there’s still that paranoia that if something happens and I do fail then I can’t graduate if I take it in the spring. If I take it this semester then I know it’s out of the way and I don’t have to worry about it. Also, since I do have to take 12 s.h. in the spring, if I get the science class out of the way, that’ll leave room for one 4 s.h. or two 3 s.h. that I can just take as an elective for fun and I kind of want the chance to take classes that I wouldn’t normally have taken.
Other factors to consider, but that aren’t really swaying me either way are that as it is now I’ll have no classes on Fridays, but if I don’t take the science course this semester I’ll have Thursdays off too. It’d be nice on one hand, but then there’s the fear of being too lazy by having four days off a week (I have a job, but it’s a tutoring job that’s sporadic, so it’s likely most weeks I will have all four days to myself), so I don’t really know either way which is best. Although I plan on applying to grad schools this semester, so the the extra day off might be a good thing as far as working on portfolios and essays and studying for the GRE and such.

So yeah, basically if you were in my position what would you choose: take more classes, to get one out of the way you want to get out of the way, or hold off on that class because it doesn’t work well with your schedule?
I can’t move the other classes to the spring. A couple classes are part of a very specific track within my major that I’ll have to take both this fall and spring, so there’s no changing those, and the other class is for my other major and is only offered in the fall.
Also, like I said, overload isn’t the issue. I’ve taken 17 or 18 s.h. every single semester except for one and I can handle it and still get good grades. The issue is more that I’d be late to the science class. I suppose I could find a different science class that would fulfill the requirement, but most interfered with my other classes when I initially registered and the ones that didn’t at this point are probably full. Like I said, it wouldn’t be a problem if they hadn’t moved the class I have before the science class. Also with the lab, it won’t take any more time than the class because it’s two one hour lectures a week (so two hours total), and a two-hour once a week lab. Lab once a week is no big deal.

PostHeaderIcon Should I go straight to Graduate School, or wait?

I am graduating with a bachelor’s in psychology this Spring 2011. I intend on going to graduate school to obtain a Doctorate and practice counseling and potentially teach at a university in the future.

I am only 19 years old (I skipped a couple grades) and I feel like I am being rushed. I have taken the GRE and I am not too happy with my results. My GPA is excellent; however, I know most graduate schools require a minimum GRE score, and unfortunately, mine isn’t very adequate.

I am not sure whether I should graduate undergrad, and then go immediately on to graduate school for my master’s, but not have my heart set on the school. Or, I will graduate, and then enroll in a GRE prep course, while working, and hopefully bring my GRE scores up greatly, and then apply to more desirable schools.

Graduation is rapidly approaching, and since I don’t have my heart fully set on a specific school(s), I feel like it is foolish to rack up my loans by attending graduate school that isn’t my first choice. Unfortunately, I feel like a loser by taking time off school.

PostHeaderIcon Have you taken the GRE?

I’m graduating college on the 20th of Dec., and I’m taking 15 hours of credits, and working 40 hours per week. I just decided to move to a new city a few days after graduation, and I have to apply to the grad school program by Jan 13 in order to start in August. I’m worried about the GRE because I don’t have time to study properly for it. I found this Kaplan online course for 99 bucks, it gives you 28 days to practice/study. Will that work? I looked at a book in the library for the GRE and I missed 9 of the first 12 practice questions. I’m also terrible at math.
I have no minimum score requirement, I just don’t want to look stupid. My GPA is a 3.58, but I’m struggling through this semester and will probably end up with Bs and Cs because of no time to study.

PostHeaderIcon Courses Before GRE Physics Test?

Hi. I’m in junior year in a university.
My major is not physics, but I need to take a GRE Physics Test for the graduate school.

Although my university advisor recommended me to take about 3 advanced physics courses (Mechanics and Relativity 1, Quantum Physics 1, and Electromagnetic Field 1) before taking the GRE Physics test, I only took four physics core courses.

I need to take the test by the end of this year if I want to attend the graduate school right after the graduation. (The deadline for the graduate school is Jan 15 every year.)

Would it be really difficult to take the GRE Physics test without completing above advanced physics courses (Study like a SAT or an ACT test)?

Thanks.
