8 years of tech experience, now want to complete bachelors.. need help?

Hi and welcome to my blog,
I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!
I completed a 2 years bachelor program in business administration with the exception of 1 course (not completed due to lack of time and necessity to work full time). I have transcripts but no degree. This was back in 2001 and since then I have been working. 4 years in a reputable US organization and eventually in a successful startup to date.
I now want to consider taking up education again, complete my bachelors from a reputable US university and perhaps do a masters.
My issues are:
I can’t afford tution.
I gave toefel eon years ago with a good score but have never given gre or SAT.
I want to know if universities consider work experience of an applicant cos I have years of it.
Need a starting point, any guidance will help. Thanks
Applying for graduate schools with a low cumulative undergraduate GPA?
Hello, in the fall, I will be a senior at a 4-year university. Currently, I have a cumulative GPA of a 2.3. Granted I work as hard as possible and pull off a consecutive 4.0s in the next 2 semesters, the highest cumulative GPA that I can leave here with is around a 2.6, 2.7, depending on my course load.
I will be graduating with my BS in social work. Naturally, I am looking into graduate schools to continue my education, and work towards getting my Master’s degree. I don’t like talking up about myself, but I know that I have a lot of things to contribute towards a graduate school application: lots of volunteer work, good letters of recommendation, positive internship experiences, leadership roles during my time spent here, and more.
However, it does bother me that many graduate schools I’m looking into applying for (specifically, SUNY Albany and SUNY Stony Brook) require a 3.0 cumulative GPA. I’ve talked to several professors in my major here, as well as some peers, and they have been telling me to go for it; apply anyways. It’s still a little discouraging anyways, when reading that some schools won’t even consider an admissions application of anyone with a cumulative GPA of below a 3.0.
I could much definitely be worse off, but I plan on working my tail off these next two semesters by getting a good GPA, as well as hopefully scoring well when I take my GRE exam.
Should I continue with applying to these schools? Or should I seek graduate schools with lower GPA requirements?
Any advice is extremely helpful, thank you!
Not that it’s any consolation, the I know that my GPA is so low because of some early classes I had taken in my freshman days. I didn’t take college too seriously at first. However, I had calculated my major GPA, and it amounts to about a 3.4. I think they’d rather look at my cumulative GPA anyways, rather than the GPA of my major classes :\
How to manage time between Academics and Job? Please, please help?
SCHEDULE: Part time Job 9am-2pm (3-4 days per week), Study at least 3hrs/day for Graduate Record Exam (GRE in month and a half), Summer course 2.5 hrs/day(6 big books in a month). (After GRE: rewrite undergrad thesis and start applications for grad school.
When working = 9-2(work), 2-3(shower+lunch), 3-6(GRE), 6-7(dinner) 7-9:30(Summer course) 9:31(contemplate suicide)
The GRE should be my main priority as it is a huge investment for my future because it could ultimately affect my whole career in terms of where I get my education. I want to quit my job but my parents want me to keep it because I committed and should be earning summer money. Any advice on this conundrum?
what subject is better for a liberal arts major in the US?
HI friends, I have a masters in English language and literature from a public university in BANGLADESH. I want to start my education here again, but I’m really confused, since i dont really know what subject to choose, right now i have two in mind. accounting, and educational administration. both r ofcourse masters degree. for accounting, i have to take the GMAT, although i have the GRE, but since i’m planning to go to Georgia Southern University in statesboro , georgia. i’ll have to take the GMAT , otherwise i wont be able to get in. i just want to know, what does a person with an M.A in educational administration do? i loved my course of study(literature) but here in the US , its a path too complicated and almost impossible to succeed in. thats why, i want something in the middle, but not teaching, or , I’m thinking off completely deviating and going into the business area.
can you help me out with your suggestions, i’ll really really appreciate your help
I want so badly to go to graduate school. What should I do?
I graduated from college 3 years ago with a major in biology from a good liberal arts college. My GPA was 3.4, but my lowest grades were all in my science courses. I’m FASCINATED by biology and geology, but it’s really hard for me to understand some of the concepts — particularly when it came to "little science" (chemistry and cellular biology). I can’t seem to get it together enough to do well in the field that I am most interested in pursuing. I don’t think I’m smart enough to get my Ph.D. but I can’t stop thinking about it.
I am currently a science teacher at the middle school level. I love teaching science, but every now and then I go online and look at the course descriptions for PhD programs and nearly start crying — I want to do that so badly!
I have a master’s degree in education and a 3.9 GPA in my master’s program. Again, my undergrad GPA was 3.4. I took the GRE’s my senior year of college. I got a 620 Verbal; 700 Quantitative and 4.5 Analytical Writing.
Anyone have advice for me? Should I just go for it and start applying? Is there anything I can do to make my dreams more accessible?

M.S.(computer Science) from U.S. universities through distance learning in India?
Hello,
I am a resident of New Delhi, India. I have received my bachelor’s degree from Delhi university, India in Computer Engineering. Now I wish to pursue my post graduation degree (masters in telecommunications) from a reputed US university. I wish to undertake the online way of studying the course from India(any city) by which i can download the lectures on PC and submit my assignments online. Regarding this I have a few question that I hope you can answer.
* Which all universities have such online education mechanism in India? I know of one, Illinois Institute of Technology. What about others?
* Besides giving GRE, do i have to give any other exams also(e.g. TOEFL etc.)?
Hoping for an early reply,
Thanks,
Is this illegal, I would like some advice before I report this to my employer?
I work for Educational Testing Services (ETS), we’re a standardized testing company that hosts various exams such as the GRE and Praxis.
We sell study material directly off of our website in the form of E-books (Electronic Books) all of which are copyrighted by us, the makers.
One day I was bored and I searched for one of our guides on ebay to see if there was any used copies. I found this guy selling our ebooks (printed out and shipped), this guy purchased our e-book and is not printing out copies and mailing them to people who buy them off him on ebay.
I’m am wondering if this is legal or illegal because he’s not actually sending the file electronically, he’s printing off the file in full and mailing physical copies.
Here is the ebay listing for this guy – tell me if you think this is illegal or legal because of the method he uses to send them.

I want to know if this is worth reporting to my supervisor or if I should let it be.

What are my chances at getting into a PhD program (see details)?
Social psychology – I have good Psychology GRE scores (95th percentile in social psych, 78th percentile in experimental psych), average scores on the general GRE (low math, very high verbal), an OK 3.45 undergrad GPA, and a handful of completely non-psych degrees – 2 associates, 1 bachelors and an MBA (I didn’t major in psych, but I have a broad education). And I have no academic lab or research experience. I’ve read dozens of psych textbooks, read most of the psych ‘classics’, and have taken about 5 undergrad psych courses. Do I have a chance to get into a social (industrial/personality/developmental) psych PhD program?
I love psychology, but stupidly went after all these degrees that would "help me get a job". I hate business and unintelligent micromanagers, I’m much more suited to a life of research and writing and experimenting. So I’m just curious about what people here with experience in this sort of thing think.
Anyway, I’m not staking any decisions on the answers here.
Why do education majors have relatively low GRE scores?
University graduates who intend to enter graduate school are required (in most cases) to take the Graduate Records Exam – which consists of verbal ability, quantitative ability, and analytical ability. Educational Testing Services (ETS) sometimes releases a list of average scores by intended major. Here is one example:
http://www.ncsu.edu/chass/philo/GRE%20Scores%20by%20Intended%20Graduate%20Major.htm
Why do you suppose that those who are pursuing a graduate degree in education tend to have the lowest scores? My only guess is that it has to do with the emphasis on courses in pedagogy. But I might be wrong. Perhaps students with weaker scholastic aptitude are attracted to this field. Does anyone have an alternative theory?
I went to a crappy school, completed, now I want to play with the big boys?
I went to Devry which by the sounds of my peers from other colleges, wasn’t so bad, but left me with to many questions to walk away from my education. I want to go to a really good school to further my education and sense I have my B.S. I would expect to work towards a M.S. degree. However, I am about to take my first grad course, without taking the GRE, school doesn’t require it. It’s a super hard school, top in the North Central US or something. I want to get some other opinions. If I don’t go for my masters, I could go for my FE license, or just continue working. I could also take some undergrad courses at night or weekends to help strenghten my skills. Anything is a possiblity.
The main dilima I have, besides to lazy to use spell checker on Yahoo Answers, is that I am not very confident in my ability to understand and interpret the the knowledge I will be subjected too. Perhaps because its such a big step, and its completely volunteer, unlike undergradate rigid daily schedule.?
GRE exam… and then a thesis…?!?
I will be a senior after this quarter and am planning to graduate with a BA in Russian (minor in German) in 2009. I am looking at grad school for an MA in International Studies (I would focus primarily on language I think). I don’t know EXACTLY what career path I want to take yet, but I do know that the ones I am interested in either require a master’s or would be much easier with one. I am trying not to think so much on how continuing my education this far would inconvenience my life (I have a 2 year old and I am married with) which has shifted my fear and excuses for NOT wanting to pursue this to the GRE exam and then having to write a thesis later.
So, I guess my questions boil down to this: how scary is the GRE (I mean, REALLY!)? how hard is it and what sort of questions are asked (like is it a harder version of SAT or something else)? and for the thesis paper, how difficult is it to come up with a topic? how long are they usually? so many people put them off; is it THAT bad?
What is the best way to prepare the GRE?
I have been out of school for 4 years and have decided to further my education in Economics. I am taking the next year to take courses for preparation as well as for admission purposes. I have to take the GRE obviously to get into a masters program. What is the best way to prepare for the GRE? I know I’ve heard courses and online things are good and bad. Any advice? Has anyone taking courses or done the online things and think it really helped? I haven’t been in the academia for years now and very rusty.
Any advise and/or suggestions would be much appreciated.

How should one study for the GRE?
I’ve recently decided to further my education and need to take the GRE. I have until February to take the exam–which I imagine is plenty of time to study. What methods worked best for you?
