TOEFL and GRE guide?

Hi and welcome to my blog,
I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!

Thanks for your help
I have GPA around 6. Suggest some universities outside India where i can get admission for masters?
I’m an Indian doing B.E. (Computer Science and Engineering) in India. At the end of my course, I expect my GPA will be between 5 to 6.5, but I have many certificates (see below)
I haven’t yet given my GRE/TOEFL/IELTS, but I hope it won’t be a big hassle for me.
Can some1 plz list the universties in US/UK in which I have chances of getting admission for Masters?
Is it possible in Auckland University (NZ)? If so what about the living cost when compared to US/UK?
Does GPA dominate over other valuable certificates?

ABOUT THE EDUCATION PATTERN HERE (YOU MAY SKIP READING)
To be frank, only 10% (at most) of the professors/lecturers here know what they’re teaching. Others just blabber something in class and go. They do something in the name of teaching, just to get their salary which is between 20000 to 40000 INR.
Examples:
1) My mam who takes "computer networks" says "this computer will hav a port number right?"
Sad that she doesn’t even know that a computer is identifed by something called IP address.
2) There is another fellow who takes "System Software". He is a big a**. He doesn’t even know basic swap program in C. But he has done M.E.!
The correction pattern here is the worst you can see in the world. 42 pages of answer sheet corrected in 1 and half minutes. They don’t read whats written in the answer sheet. If we write something in a different way (but is correct), they don’t even bother to see if its correct or not. They just want us to write whatever is given in the book. I am not used to this in my school (which was far better). Moreover because if incidents like this, I lost interest in academics and this further made me take things easily. I dont have any satisfaction that i learnt something from college.
This extends to most of the colleges here except IIT, NIT, BITS, SSN, Sastra University etc.

LIST OF CERTIFICATES
During my 11th, i did project on "cartography and cryptography". third place in state level and got consolation prize in national level.
Then I did a small presentation at IIT-M in the same topic as I was asked to do.
.
During my second semester, i was a finalist in a software cracking contest conducted by a Madras Inst. of Tech.
I (along with my school teacher) did an online quiz software using php/js/mysql and we hosted it at IIT madras which was used by around 2000 teachers . Well i know it isn’t a big thing but I hav a appreciation letter from Education officer, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, which comes under Ministry of Human Resource Development (India).
I recently won 2nd prize by participating in a Line following Robot contest.
I was a finalist in a Hacking and three other events conducted by SSN College of Engineering.
I’m got a inplant training offer from CEERI. My friend’s dad is working as a scientist there (:P). And for most of the work he does with students, he encourages students to present an IEEE paper based on it. The good thing is that most of such papers get selected for presentatio at IEEE conferences. I hope I’ll be one among those lucky guys to present and IEEE paper.
Apart from all these, I have many participation certificates.

I want to do MS Computer Science in US. Which GRE should I write: General or Subject Specific?
I want t do MS in Computer Science in the US for which I want to write the GRE. However the ETS website www.ets.org lists two types of GRE exams: a general purpose GRE and subject specific GRE exams in 8 subjects. For getting admission into MS in Computer Science do I have to write the general GRE test or the Computer Science GRE test?
graduate university help!!!!?
hi all i’m an international student from india. my gre was 1300 (800 + 500) and toefl was 107. i had applied to 4 universities for MS in computer science- U PENN, JHU, NYU and U PITT.
i had pretty strong SOP with 4 fairly strong LOR’s from 3 professors and a company i had my training in. the problem with my profile was my acads. i only had a gpa of around 3.2/4. (i say around coz in my university we follow the percentage system in every course)
so the problem is that now i have received a reject from U PENN and the rest universities are saying that they’ll take around 2 weeks for the decision. but now my idiotic decision of applying to 4 universities is biting my a$$. so is there any other university which has admission open even now???
(i’m applying to north eastern univ tomorrow morning)… plz plz let me know any university or guidance. i understand there is no spoon feeding here but i have been so tense for the past few days that i cant see any hope….
also if not possible,
I want to study in Canada. What is the minimum academic requirement to apply to a decent university?
I have done my Bachelor of Engineering in Computers from Mumbai University with an aggregate of 53 . I am looking to apply for an MS course in Aug 2010 in Computer Science. I really need to know if I will be able to get through to a nice university. I plan to give my GRE and TOEFL/ IELTS in Nov and that won’t be a problem at all. It’s just that I think my academics do not reflect my true potential and I’m just worried I will miss out on a top – notch university.
I’d also appreciate it if anybody can give me an idea about the job prospects in Canada after I complete my Masters.
Please help me regarding the decision to go to US?
I have gre score of 1490/1600 and excellent academic record. I have applied for MS in Computer Science. People whom I know have told that I have very good chance of getting into a very good university. Please tell me about life of a student pursuing MS. Also considering todays situation (recession and all) is it good to go to US even if i get into top university? My parents can finance my education for now but after completion of course I will need to get a descent job as the cost is quite high. What do u suggest? also please tel me about positive points of higher education(MS in computer science) in US. Please help me as this is one of the most important decisions of my life. Thank you!

Grad School and GPA's?
I have a specific question-
So here’s my undergraduate record:
The first 2.5 years I was enrolled in a good community college (doesn’t mean much but it’s top ranked in the nation among community colleges and it was tougher than some 4-year schools in my state). I completed an associate’s degree and worked full-time simultaneously. My GPA was 3.797 for 64 credits, and I became a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society. I also was a member of the Student Government and a tutor in computer science. My major was humanities/social sciences.
I transferred into a top-tier state school. According to rankings, it is just below Cornell, and just above NYU (overall score, some programs in specific differ). This was a tough, tough school, and I didn’t transition well. I got diagnosed with bipolar disorder and barely made it through some semesters. From here, my total GPA is 2.993, and my major (Psychology) GPA is 3.063. I was not a member of any clubs, and I worked roughly 30 hours a week for a few semesters. I did volunteer work with a fraternity and I also was a volunteer in a Developmental Research lab. I have another semester of enrolled lab experience as well.
Cumulatively (community college + university), I have a 3.37 GPA and a 3.06 major GPA. I retook four courses.
If I stay an extra semester, I can retake one course and add a couple more courses to it and bring my GPA up to 3.48 or 3.5. I can also get one semester’s worth of research lab experience out of this, totaling it to 1.5 years of research experience.
My goal is to get into graduate school (not shooting for a Ph.D. yet), but just as a master’s level student of psychology (clinical). I don’t think its a question of ability as much as it was of circumstance and this university not being a good fit for me. I felt suffocated by the high standards here. Compared to my state’s flagship university, Rutgers, it is tougher. My GPA of 3.37 translates to a 3.57 in Rutgers, and a 3.76 in Rutgers Newark Campus.
As a psychology student I don’t have many options for my future, and because I chose the wrong school I have this obstacle to deal with. And my concerns were not petty, either. I was hospitalized twice and had gone through weekly therapy and treatment. I just want to go to graduate school and do something with my knowledge. I want to work in the field of mental health, preferably as a researcher or writer, and wish to get my Ph.D. sometime in my life. Will graduate school factor in my community college GPA or will they only consider my university GPA?
These are my qualifications:
1 year of research experience
.5 years of internship experience
128 credit hours completed
GPA: 3.37 (cumulative) 3.09 (major)
B.A. Clinical Psychology
A.A. Social Sciences
- Organization Memberships
- Volunteer Experience
- Letters of Recommendation
Will they consider my 2-year GPA?
If I do good at the GRE, will I have a chance?
Will they understand my circumstances?

With this GRE score, can I get into the master program of those universities?
I know the admission process of universities also consider credentials other than the GRE score. But I just want to know with the scores I got today whether I need to re-take GRE exam to have fairly good chance of getting into the online/part-time master degree program in Computer Science for the schools mentioned below
My GRE score from the test today:
Verbal: 600,
Quantative: 720
Analytical Writing: N/A (I’ll probably get at least 4.0)
Schools:
Stanford University
Columbia University (CVN)
University of Southern California (DEN)
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Carnegie Mellon University – West Campus

PhD without GRE
PhD without GRE
If you are pursuing for a PhD but you do not feel confident with taking the GRE there are some universities in the US which do not require GRE exam. Some Small private (sometimes Catholic) Universities in US don’t require GRE or even an impressive undergrad GPA to enroll in Grad Degree Program. These are usually really good “teaching universities” as opposed to “research universities”. Also, there are a lot of “online universities” offering PhDs without GRE/GMAT score in the US. However, if you are not planning on having a degree on-line, then I would recommend you to take the GRE test. When you think about it PhD is all about research, if you are not willing to take GRE or TOEFL, then why do you want to think about PhD? PHD requires intensive effort, you should be precise and goal oriented to complete PhD in US Universities. In comparison to completing PhD GRE is a children game. If you plan to take the easy route, then you will surely face the consequences few years down the road.
Also, even though you might choose eventually a program that does not require GRE, TOEFL or iBT/IELTS exams are compulsory for all students wishing to pursue an education in the U.S so if you already study for TOFFEL exam you just might as well learn for the GRE. Another point is if you are thinking to study Doctorate degree, then it should be good university, which has research in your field of interest and professors who will be supportive to take you as student. So, don’t waste your time searching for Universities for PhD without Gre, instead spend time to prepare for GRE.
And the last thing which is no less important is that it is very tough to get a visa without GRE scores.
