PostHeaderIcon how hard is the GRE exam or GMAT?

Looking for info on gre preparation classes, gre preparation courses, gre test course and more?

Hi and welcome to my blog,

I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!

I’m graduating with a BA in liberal studies. I was going to be a teacher, but decided i want to get an MBA instead. The only thing I’m worried about is math. I’ve only had to go up to about algebra. I never took a calculus or trig class in my life. I’m planning on studying this summer, so I’ll have 3 months. Is that long enough? Is it something I can pass if I study?

PostHeaderIcon How can I study, focus, & concentrate if my OCD unwanted thoughts are hindering me from doing so?

I can’t even read the 1st 3 words of a sentence without those thoughts, & they’re repetitive. It’s depriving me from learning, & professors say I don’t follow directions, & that I don’t pay attention. I can’t control my mind wandering, trying to fight these thoughts away. & I can’t let the thoughts succeed & go through. I don’t want to. They’re poisonous thoughts that I can’t get out of my head. This causes me to fail exams & not do well in school. I have a BA in Spanish, but with a low GPA. So, I have the opportunity to take extra courses to raise my GPA & take the GRE, & I’m having the same problem studying for the GRE. Nothing is sinking in. Nothing I read or study. I don’t want this do destroy me & me feel like a failure & unable to get into graduate school to study linguistics & continuing my Spanish studies.

PostHeaderIcon Graduate School/GRE Help?

I have two questions..One about the GRE, and specifically the Math Section.
And my second question being about Grad School and when to get letters of recommendation..

1. I’m planning on taking the revised GRE test in September or October of this year..However, I’m pretty awful at Math..yes, I did get my BA–but thankfully my major only required me to take one math class. I’m worried because I’m even worse at math tests. I plan on studying and practicing the guide given as best as I can..but if I do bomb the math portion (not concerned about the other two) but excel in the other sections…
do you think that will look bad and consider not admitting me? At the moment I’m looking at 2 schools..one the GRE is required, but no specific score is listed, the other a, ‘580 should be obtained’ if I do not get a 580 (or however that works out in the revised test because the scores are different) will that automatically be a determining factor?

2. I plan on attending in Fall 2012, quite possibly Fall 2013..At this point I’ll have been an alumni for 2/3 years…what would be the best time to ask for the three recommendations needed? I know who I currently want them to be from (former boss, and two professors) but if 2/3 years have passed..does look bad not having as current recommendations? or good that after that time these people can speak highly of me? Seems like a double edged sword.. So should I just wait until I know for sure if I’m attending in ‘12 or ‘13?

PostHeaderIcon When applying to a graduate school in Psychology do BA and BS degrees have the same standing?

Do grad schools prefer a BS over a BA due to the emphasis on science in a BS degree or are they looked at as the same? I am currently going for a BS in psych but am looking at transferring to another university that only offers a BA. I want to make sure that I am not hurting my chances of being accepted to a graduate school. Of course this is assuming that all things are equal when getting the 2 degrees….ie GPA, scholastic record, letters of recommendation, and GRE scores…Thanks for your help.

PostHeaderIcon Any advice for the GRE exam?

I will be taking the general, computer-based GRE for the first (and hopefully last) time in three weeks. I don’t really know what to expect, but I have always done well on standardized tests. Any comments on the kinds of questions asked, or tips for preparing?

I am close to graduating with a BA in English literature; I have high reading and writing skills, but my math is pretty rusty (I have only studied up to basic Statistics). I want to apply to a graduate program in Information Science.

PostHeaderIcon would you tell me that which college/university of usa is best for my masters or diploma or certificate?

PostHeaderIcon What are my chances of getting into graduate school?

I’m graduating in April with a BA in Communication Studies and international business minor. I have a GPA of 3.25, and I also have 3 strong letters of recommendation. I want to get into a master’s program at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, University of Maryland College Park, or University of Wisconsin Madison. In college I was actively invovled, worked at the admissions office, studied abroad. In addition I have some foreign language and statistics experience. I was going to minor in statistics but dropped it, so I have taken some statistics course. I have not yet taken the GRE, but I am in November. Do I have a chance, or are these schools out of my range??

PostHeaderIcon I have a BA in History and I want to get my master's in math. GRE question?

I just got my BA in History because it was the quickest route, and my counselor told me that I do not need to be a math major to go to graduate school for math, I just need to pass the math GRE.

What I am wondering is how can I best prepare for this exam. Do you have to have the equivalent knowledge of a Bachelor’s in Math? I have not taken any upper division math courses but I have taken several lower division calculus classes.

What would you recommend for me?

Thank you so much!

PostHeaderIcon If I am coming into a subject cold, with a BA degree in an unrelated major, should I get a MA or another BA?

Here’s the situation. I’m 38 years old and considering a career change. I have a Bachelors degree in media arts from a 3 year college in 1994, but I’m looking at courses in International Relations. I’ve never worked in the IR or politics fields before but I’ve always been interested. Do I need to start over from scratch and get another BA in IR or will a good GRE get me into a masters degree program?

PostHeaderIcon GRE exam… and then a thesis…?!?

I will be a senior after this quarter and am planning to graduate with a BA in Russian (minor in German) in 2009. I am looking at grad school for an MA in International Studies (I would focus primarily on language I think). I don’t know EXACTLY what career path I want to take yet, but I do know that the ones I am interested in either require a master’s or would be much easier with one. I am trying not to think so much on how continuing my education this far would inconvenience my life (I have a 2 year old and I am married with) which has shifted my fear and excuses for NOT wanting to pursue this to the GRE exam and then having to write a thesis later.

So, I guess my questions boil down to this: how scary is the GRE (I mean, REALLY!)? how hard is it and what sort of questions are asked (like is it a harder version of SAT or something else)? and for the thesis paper, how difficult is it to come up with a topic? how long are they usually? so many people put them off; is it THAT bad?

PostHeaderIcon How do I get an masters in Computer Science from an unrelated BA?

I’ve taken about 3 CS courses in my life and a few calculus classes. The instructor from my C++ class said I could get a masters degree in 2-2.5 years. I haven’t taken any CS courses for about 4 years, however. I want to go to a U.C. I don’t think I’m going to do great on the math portion of the GRE, taking into account practice scores and my SAT results. I guess the place to start would be with an admissions advisor but they might not take me seriously considering my BA was in Literature. I’m willing to start at a community college in the bay area but I don’t think they usually offer much selection in terms of transferrable programming classes. If I can’t do the masters then I’ll try to do a second BS. Anyone out there with experience have suggestions?

PostHeaderIcon ECE CLEP GRE Excelsior proficiency exams. Anyone have suggestions on study guides and resources for BA exams?

I am going to be taking these exams from scratch and I sure could use some help! I really need suggestions on study materials. I am looking to work towards a Bachelors Degree. A BA in general studies with Excelsior College. Has anyone here done this? and if so, what materials helped you to prepare with no previous knowledge…..Please remember, I am starting from A one on these subjects so I need resources that cover the gamut. Assuming there is no prior knowledge on the subject at hand, what would you recommend?
If you have any questions for me which you might need answered in order to help me, I will be happy to give you my e-mail upon request.

Thank you! This is quite important to me and I truly and sincerely appreciate any help!

PostHeaderIcon Too Late to Go to Graduate School for Psychology This fall?

Hi, I majored in Economics, BA, I had a 3.25 GPA and an 1140 GRE. Any chance that if I apply now I can get into any kind of respectable graduate school for Psychology that will eventually lead to a PhD? I have never taken a Psyhce course.

PostHeaderIcon GRE Scores and phd in art history?

I’m in the process of applying for phd programs in art history. I graduated 4 years ago with a strong GPA (about 3.5 overall) BA in History and German with art history classes and I want to attend a competitive program. I met with some old profs lately and have been guided to yale, delaware, nyu and rutgers. I took the GRE last week and i’m not really able to discern if my scores are competitive (and i really don’t want to go through that test again!)
I’m wondering if my gre scores are competitive… obviously I doon’t have my writing samples scored yet but I feel confident that I will score high in them. Anyway, my verbal/math scores were 610/630, respectively. Any suggestions, I haven’t been able to find anything out on my own???

I really appreciate it!
just got my writing score back, which was 5.0
graduated from university of michigan, with a BA in History and a BA in German.
studied in Germany 2001-2002, fluent in german and two semester of french and applying for an intensive latin summer course (as medieval art history is my dream)

thanks for the advice so far!

PostHeaderIcon How difficult is it to earn an MLS and become a certified teacher-librarian?

I’m 23, have a BA in journalism, very interested in education field, but don’t desire to become a traditional classroom teacher. I like working on computers, learning new media technologies, research various subjects constantly as per current field-related work. I want to know how difficult course work is and what type of exams (GRE, Praxis, etc.) are needed to become a teacher-librarian? Also, can anyone recommend it as a field?

PostHeaderIcon How should I study for the GRE?

Info about me: I have my BA in English with a creative writing concentration and am applying to grad schools hoping to get into a creative writing program. I got a 29 on the ACT and had a cumulative GPA of 3.6 in college.

What’s the best way to study for the GRE? I’m not good at math and I’m not sure what else is on it. Is there a particular book or program that you think is better than another? What helped you prepare?

Thanks so much!
