Hello,
I got my bachelor’s of mathematics last year and I’m taking a year off this year to travel a bit before going to do my master’s (I’m hoping to enroll in engineering). Anyway, I took the GRE General test and my results were not spectacular (470 verbal, 740 math). I’m signed up to take the math subject test on the 7th of november, but I’m debating on whether I should or not.
Since I’m taking a year off, I’m not doing any math, and I haven’t had access to any of my books or notes or anything. And I guess being in Korea learning Korean, I haven’t been studying much.
I’m primarily looking at schools in Texas since they seem to be within my reach (california universities are out of my reach I think), and those I’ve looked at so far do not require the Subject test, just the general. But I would not like to be disadvantaged or to see admission refused to a certain university because I didn’t take the GRE Subject test.
I’ve been gathering my documents and stuff and I’m about to apply, so I don’t know if there will be schools that I will want to apply to that will require the GRE Subject test. It’s possible that I apply to 4 or 5 schools.
Seeing that it’s been a few months since I’ve done any math, and since I’ve not had access to my books, do you think it’s worth taking the test? I’m afraid that if I do take it, it just ends up hurting me because of poor results.
I need advice…
By guessing, I mean just choosing random answers without really looking at the questions.
Yes, if I didn’t get 800 on the math part, it’s because I didn’t pace myself well and ended up guessing on the last few questions because I ran out of time.
I know it has something to do with admission into a grad program, but what is the test?

hi,i am a final year under graduate engineering student in india. i want to do my post graduate in the US. i have my gre exam coming up on aug16,but i find that i have not done enough preparations for it as i have scored only around 1300 in one of the mock tests. will it be advisable to cancel the exam now and write after i complete my undergraduate, cos most students in india write the exam during the final year. will it affect my admission to universities in any way?
The GRE (The Graduate Record Examinations) test is a based computer test that consists of different question types, verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing, and different degree of difficulty. In the math section, for instance, many problems are designed to see if you can apply some little short cut to get to the answer.
Today more and more students want to attend graduate schools not in their native country but all over the globe. In order to get accepted taking the GRE test is mandatory. Obviously the higher your score is the better chances you have to get accepted to the institution you want. It is important to know that there are many MBA programs now that accept GRE scores instead of GMAT.
It is hard to determine how long to study for GRE since it is of course very individual. Some take the course and for a short period of time focus only on the test while others don’t have a lot of hours a day to devote for studying so they have to learn for a longer period and of course some may find this test easy some may find it hard. However, I would say that roughly two month are enough to go thoroughly over the different subjects. If you have less time than that then focus on the essentials, buy cards that consist of the relevant vocabulary, solve the most difficult logic problems and see if you can handle that. (You can buy books that will have representative problem,e.g. the monthly logic puzzle books in order to figure out th logic problems which some find hard to grasp and so on.) But ideally it would be around to or three month to get ready for the GRE.

I am an Indian. My brother has written his GRE and scored 1060. Will it be difficult for him to get an admission in a good university with this score? Will his score affect his US visa processing in any way because i have been hearing stories off-late that a lot of the students visa is being rejected?

I plan on applying to a graduate school program next year and I’d like to know if, on average, an 800 (the minimum score for admission) on the GRE basic test is hard to get. Also, I’d like to know how most people prepare to take the GRE basic test. Thanks–please drown me with suggestions!
What the GRE validity?is this equivalent to the Degree?if i want to study more then may i get admission in Master degree only on the basis of GRE? is it valid for the whole life , or only for some years? do i need any graduate degree if i have GRE?
I have to go to UCF for my grad school and I was wondering if anyone knows what a good GRE score is for a "guaranteed" admission or for a really high chance of getting in.
2) Also, in general, at all colleges, what is considered a decent GRE score and what is considered a great/extraordinary GRE score?
Thanks.
I am from India. I will write GRE in two weeks. I am an average student who managed 80% marks in B.Tech from a so-so university. I know I can’t get admission into universities like Stanford, MIT etc. I am from electrical background but wish to study anything related to either computer science or electrical. By electrical I mean, more electrical and less electroncis.
please tell me what US universities I should apply for along with the GRE test. Please do not tell me that I should search and find out. I have searched enough but I am still confused. Please assume that you are in my shoes and let me know what you would apply for. I’ll consider the universities again after your responses.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
