Should I take a GRE prep course?
Looking for info on gre preparation classes, gre preparation courses, gre test course and more?

Hi and welcome to my blog,
I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!
I am a pretty good student, my GPA is a 3.9. Out of all of the programs I am applying to, only one university requires the GRE. The prep course in my area is 0, and I really can’t afford it. Will I be OK if I just get a GRE prep book to study with? Please only answer if you actually know, thanks ![]()
I took the GRE last year, and I will say that I don’t think a prep course is necessary at all. The GRE is not nearly as difficult as people make it out to be. It’s basically a glorified SAT. You have the same silly language questions and analogies. And the math section was okay, not my strong suit though. The essays weren’t that bad either. One was a personal opinion piece (easy enough for anyone who can write clearly, which you obviously can), and the other required some actual knowledge and facts from your field of study. If you paid attention in undergraduate this shouldn’t be highly difficult either.
If you go to the GRE website you can order a free CD that will have sample tests and essays. This was the most useful tool for me. It gives you examples of essays at each scoring level so that you can see exactly what it takes to do well. And it gives you timed tests you can practice on. Plus, the GRE is all on the computer now, so you will get to practice with the actual interface they use.
Honestly, the most difficult part of the GRE was that it was so long. Having to keep alert while sitting in silence staring at a computer screen for four hours straight, answering question after question, can be tiring.
You may want to brush up on your math skills, mostly algebra and geometry. But you can do that on your own, with old class notes or any textbook on the subjects. Also, if the subject you’re studying isn’t related to math, don’t worry about it too much, the schools won’t even look at it.
