PhD without GRE

If you are pursuing for a PhD but you do not feel confident with taking the GRE there are some universities in the US which do not require GRE exam. Some Small private (sometimes Catholic) Universities in US don’t require GRE or even an impressive undergrad GPA to enroll in Grad Degree Program. These are usually really good “teaching universities” as opposed to “research universities”. Also, there are a lot of “online universities” offering PhDs without GRE/GMAT score in the US. However, if you are not planning on having a degree on-line, then I would recommend you to take the GRE test. When you think about it PhD is all about research, if you are not willing to take GRE or TOEFL, then why do you want to think about PhD? PHD requires intensive effort, you should be precise and  goal oriented  to complete PhD in US Universities. In comparison to completing PhD GRE is a children game. If you plan to take the easy route, then you will surely face the consequences few years down the road.

Also, even though you might choose eventually a program that does not require GRE, TOEFL or iBT/IELTS exams are compulsory for all students wishing to pursue an education in the U.S so if you already study for TOFFEL exam you just might as well learn for the GRE. Another point is if you are thinking to study Doctorate degree, then it should be good university, which has research in your field of interest and professors who will be supportive to take you as student. So, don’t waste your time searching for Universities for PhD without Gre, instead spend time to prepare for GRE.

And the last thing which is no less important is that it is very tough to get a visa without GRE scores.

GRE Test Questions?

I am getting ready to take the GRE exam in December so I can start applying for graduate schools in the Spring. I am planning on getting a Masters of Public Health degree. I am fairly confident on my quantitiative reasoning, but my verbal reasoning might be another story.

For anyone who has taken the GRE, if I score good my goal (500 or more) on quantitiative, but score under my goal (500 or more) for verbal, but then the 2nd time score over 500 on verbal and my quantitative score is less the 2nd time, can I combine the scores from Test 1 and 2 to give me the best results? Or do I have to take both scores off the same test day?

Thanks!

cannot get the answer with those GRE questions!?

How did they find those?
1- 4 students have to be chosen 2 girls as captain and vice captain and 2 boys as captain and vice captain of the school. there are 15 girls and 12 boys. In how many ways can they be chosen if sunita (girl) is sure to be captain?
Ans 1848.

2-A prof prepares a test. She gives 5 objective type questions out of which 4 have to be answered. Find the total way in which they can be answered if the first 2 questions have 2 choices and the last 3 have 4 choices.
A: 816

3-How many five digit numbers are there with distinct digits?
Ans:27216

4-In how many ways can 15 students be seated in a row such that the most 2 talkative students never sit together?
Ans 14! *13

5-Find the number of words which can be formed by using the letter of the word EQUATION if each word has to start with a vowel?
Ans: 25200

6-How many five digit numbers can be formed using the digits 0,2,3,4,5 when repetition is allowed such that the number formed is divisible by 2 or 5 or both?
Ans: 1500

GRE Math Questions..please help!?

Hey everyone..
I just took a practice GRE and I’m not sure how to (quickly) solve the following questions without a calculator..any help would be greatly appreciated.

1) Which is larger: 100,210 X 90,021 or 100,021 X 90,210
…I know how to multiply them (obviously) but there has to be some quicker way!

2) Which is larger: Sqrt(10)XSqrt(5) or 7.

The only way that I was able to figure this one out was to simplify it to 5XSqrt(2) and then "roughly" multiply 1.41X5. Is there not a more simple way to find this answer?

3) Which is larger: The greatest Prime Factor of 3^5 or the greatest Prime Factor of 5^3

any help on any of these problems would be greatly appreciated!

Two GRE Math Questions?

Okay, I’m studying up for the GRE. My math is going nicely, but a few forms of discrete math are really fuzzy. The memory has gathered dust, y’see.

Anyhow, here’s one. Pretty simple I’m sure, but not much is stirring up in the old brain…:
There is a five question test. Of these five questions, only four need to be done. For the first two questions, there are three answer choices. For the last three questions, there are four answer choices.

The answer is 816, but upon fiddling around with the numbers some, I’m not quite following how they get to this answer. Makes me a tad bit upset that the site isn’t saying how they get these values, but at least they give ‘em.

Also, there’s another question, which is simple (I’m sure), but it’s not something I recall having done. The second question is as follows:

How many 5 digit numbers are there with distinct digits.

The answer is 27216

Pretty simple I’m sure, but I’ve run through a few Googles and not much is panning out.

Might make a few more questions across the next several weeks whenever I get stumped on something like this.
Okay, second question is solved. Much oblige. What about the first one, though?

GRE math questions gone awry?

I am preparing for the GRE, and am using GRE bible to look over some quantitative questions at the moment. As far as I can tell, I’ve come across a number of incorrect test answers, and unless I’m missing something, this program is ridiculous. Here are 2 more problematic examples: (Please tell me if i am missing something)

ds cannot = 0

Column A: The time required to travel ‘d’ miles at ’s’ miles per hour.

Column B: The time required to travel d/2 miles at 2s miles per hour.

By my calculation, Column B is greater, but GRE bible says Column A is greater. Help!

Second Question:

m, p, and x are positive integers. mp=x

Column A: m
Column B: x

My answer was D (that there is not enough information to determine their relationship.) I said this because if ‘m’ and ‘p’ both equal 1, then the 2 quantities are equal; and under all other conditions, ‘x’ would be greater than ‘m’. Therefore answer is D

Am I missing something? I have come across a number of other apparently erroneous examples like these. wtf
Thanks for the help ajordan. I now see where i went wrong with the first question, but I’m still not sure why ‘m’ and ‘x’ cannot be equal in the second one. Note that if they can be equal, then the Answer is D because there is more than one solution (According to the GRE rules).

GRE question, With a score of 720, What are the chances of getting into a Graduate School?

I took my GRE exam today. My weak side was English and my strong side I thought was Math. Apparently, the grade I got was very Shocking. I got 370 in Math and 350 in English. When I took the exam, Math did not seem hard at all and I was expecting a 450+. My GPA is only 2.7. I know I should re take my GRE, but as of know what are the chances of getting into an ok Graduate School?
Well I know my GPA is low, My first two year of college I really did bad and improved there on. First two year of college, I was not focused and did not care much and it is causing me a lot of hassle. I have been getting mostly B’s And few A’s but my GPA not changing much. My Undergraduate degree is in environmental science and I already work for the Federal Government. I want to do my masters in Geography/GIS, and i already got some certification in GIS.

If you’ve taken the GRE lately, the vocabulary questions were much harder than this, right?

I came across this site with GRE practice questions, and these questions seem extremely easy. The GRE is much more difficult, right?

AttN: GRE veterans: GRE Questions–help please!?

I am a junior right now and I plan on taking GRE next year (I hope I am not too late). People recommend to take it before it changes in september. And I also heard that we should register early because there will be many people trying to take it before it changes.

So my questions are:

1. How long does it take to prepare for it?

2. Can I register early (like now) for a test half a year in advance?

3. Do you recommend taking GRE before it changes also?

4. My weakest portion is the verbal. I heard that it’s helpful to read newspapers/megazines to learn more new words. Which one do you recommend?

5. If I want to leave enough time to retake the GRE (only if I need to), how much time should I put off before September (including receiving the score from the first test and then register and take the second one befoer September)?

Thanks a lot!

I am using my refund check from school to purchase a much needed laptop, what is the best brand I can buy?

I am a college junior and I have never had the money to buy my own laptop for school. Finally, due to hard earned scholarships this semester I am receiving 00 in a refund check and I want (really need) to buy a laptop for the rest of undergrad and graduate school. I would like to know what is the best (most reliable, fast, less likely to crash, and will survive graduate school) laptop to buy

My son needs a laptop computer for school homework – nothing too fancy. Should I buy used or new one?

What is an excellent quality brand of laptop computer? I’m looking for one that is worth repairing or upgrading if needed. Anything under 0 worth buying? He needs one for word processing, spreadsheet use, etc. It is important to have at least a 2-3 hour battery.
He needs a laptop to take to school. He has a minor writing disability that results in pain and very poor legibility.

What Would Be A Good Laptop To Buy For School Use?

I’d use it for taking notes, and maybe going online, but that’s probably it. It’d have to be smaller, and portable, and cheap.

Help with percentages on GRE questions?

I’m pretty handy with my shortcuts in math but is there something I’m missing here?

Mary received a net of 5 that was 65% of her gross paycheck.
A- Mary’s gross paycheck
B- 0

The answer is they’re the same, but how are you supposed to figure that out without a calculator?

What is the pattern of questions asked in the GRE exam?

I’m a fresher in college and i wanna crack the GRE.Can anyone please tell me how i can prepare for it , or what kinda test-practice i’ll require to be successful?

When do the new GRE questions start counting towards your score?

When do the new write-in quantitative and multi-answer verbal questions that appear on the GRE begin to count towards your score? Currently, it seems like the GRE is just looking to see if those questions are reliable and valid. But I heard that starting on October, they’ll begin to count towards your score. Does anyone know if this is true? I can’t find any information confirming this notion, but a Princeton Review guy told me it was true.
