What can I do to stand out in my PhD application to Harvard (in mathematics)?

Hi and welcome to my blog,
I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!
I am an undergraduate mathematics student at a large and prestigious public university, whose research interests are most highly represented by the faculties of Harvard, Berkeley, Princeton, Columbia, and Chicago. That is, I am interested in algebraic geometry, category/topos theory, logic/universal algebra, and algebraic combinatorics (these intersect somewhere–I swear).
Unfortunately, the best scholars in these respective fields are professors at certain institutions whose admissions standards are, well, strenuous. I am just beginning my undergraduate career, though I am at present certain of my scholarly ambitions in mathematics. My record has been solid (save for a first mathematics course in which I received a C+; the rest have been high A’s, and have been in advanced/graduate level coursework).
So, along with REUs, solid letters of recommendation, cogent research statements, good grades, high GRE scores, etc., etc., what can I do to stand out in my application to Harvard, et al?
Is UCLA located in a good area?what about the school's engineering course?
i am foreigner ,and my GPA is low,and what about the TOEFL and GRE ,by the way,Purdue is the good choice either?
Should I retake this course?
For nearly my entire college career I’ve been an A student. I just graduated this May with a 3.6 GPA but I have a C- on my transcript from a biology class that was exceptionally difficult for me. I recently did the math and found out that if I had taken this class as a pass/fail my graduating GPA would have been a 3.75.
Because I took overloads each semester last year, I decided to take this coming fall off to study for my GRE and start applying to graduate programs for psych. Being as graduate programs are getting increasingly more competitive, I am wondering if it would be worthwhile to retake the Bio course and make sure I do REALLY well in it this time to try and boost my GPA back up. Any grade I get in it (provided it’s a better grade) will replace my first grade.
I guess I’m wondering if I’m being irrational or if retaking the course would be worthwhile, giving my GPA bit more of a competitive edge (putting all other aspects of my transcript and experience aside).
Thanks for reading through this!

Are there any grad schools accepted 2.5 to 3.0??? Electrical/Computer engineeirng.?
I know Im dumb so don’t harsh.
Are there any schools accepted 2.5 to 3.0???
Please advice some schools with big name in general or in engineering I don’t care.I don’t want to go to state university for my grad.
I think after finishing my undergrad , I will have:
3-straight quarter thesis (research) – that is mandatory in order to graduate with an engineering degree at my school
one internship or co op.
GRE – I don’t know yet but I will try my best
GPA – the highest I can get is 3.2 because I never on the top on my classes ( only 2 to 5 students can get A in each engineering course at my school) but I have a lot of B-, C+ so I may end up 2.8 2.9.
Letter of Recommendation: I will try to get at least three.( Im just planning. What about if I don’t get any?????? )
Please help, How do I control my anger?
I’m taking my gre’s in a few weeks, and I’m very stressed and I don’t know how to keep my emotions under control. Everything and everyone is making me angry. My parents don’t help me; they find some way to irritate me. We’re remodeling our house and lawn and my parents are forcing me to make all the decisions, and oversee everything. I feel responsible because my dad got laid off a couple of years ago, and my mom is the one going to work. I love my parents, but I’m so stressed out and instead of trying to make my environment peaceful they make it stressful. I sometimes lash out at them, and they look at me like I’m crazy. My friends are annoying me. I’ve always been there for them. But lately I don’t have time to hangout and bullshit w. them on the phone because I have to study. So when I do see them or talk to them, all my best friend can talk about is this guy she loves. Of course I want to hear about her relationship and problems, but not the entire time. But allll she talks about is him. Whenever we start talking about something else, she finds someway to go right back to him. I get so angry; I barely talk or see her, and she knows I’m really scared about my test, and all she can f*ing talk about is him and what’s happening. I know I sound selfish. Yes, she has talked to me about my boy problems, but one time I was really upset about this guy, and we only talked about him in 2 convos, whereas for her problems it’s been 3 months. Whenever I talk about how scared I am about my test, she says sry she wishes she could help, and then it goes right back to him. And she doesn’t drive, and has asked me a couple of times if I could drive her to a couple of places; like are u f*ing serious, i have a test in 2 wks! I seriously can’t take it. I don’t know why, I feel like I’m about to explode. Everything is pissing me off. I feel like I have no support, and I’m trying to be independent and do everything myself, but I’m cracking. There’s no one I can just lean on or depend on to do little things for me. How do I control my anger??

As a business undergrad, why do I feel as if I should get an MBA?I don't want to get an MBA!?
I’m interested in going to grad school for architecture. I’m studying the GRE however, every time I review course descriptions or go to a prospective schools graduate page – the letters MBA catches my eye as I should be studying the GMAT? Is it because my work experience is and has always been in a business setting?
I’m just not happy continuing business.
How worth while is getting an MBA? I feel like the probability of getting accepted into an MBA program are much higher because of my experience .. but I shouldn’t base what I want to do on that, should I? I’m also not sure why I’m all the sudden so GD ambivalent, so I turn to you yahoo answers. go!
Why is English given such an important place in competitive exams?
Many colleges and universities conduct entrance exams before admitting students into their institution. I have wondered why a good understanding of the English language is so crucial in these exams.
Take for example the Gradate Recognition Examination (GRE), an exam an aspirant has to clear, before he can start studying in the US.
The exam focuses so much on English comprehension and vocabulary. (Of course, it does include tests of math and reasoning abilities too) But English occupies such a central role.
Also, I notice that the words used to test vocabulary are not so common-place, if not altogether obsolete. Why is it important for me to know words like ‘recant’, ‘upbraid’ and ‘ameliorate’ which I have never till now and probably never will.* A thought comes to mind: How many of these words figure in President Obama’s day-to-day conversations or speeches?
* – abominate, inveterate, orotund, scurrilous, fulmination, distend… the list goes on.
Surely, pulling out a list of vague words from the dictionary, cannot be a test of the applicant’s overall competence. This is especially true in this age of globalisation where the trend is towards simplifying the language more so that people can communicate more easily.
Is it merely to filter the huge number of applications so that only a few manage to qualfy? What other purpose does it solve?
is a 3.2-3.3 a good gpa for college considering?
i was a biology major. i had a hard time with it. i am improving my gpa. it was a 2.9 now it is a 3.1 something, by the time i graduate it will be a 3.2-3.3. so i am wondering. is a 3.2-3.3 a good gpa for a college student. i will be applying to graduate school, but of course the schools i am applying to say a 3.0 or higher and don’t require the GRE. so i think i might be okay. just wondering though. thanks in advance.
by the way i am a sociology major, psychology and religion minor. i will be applying for my master’s of social work soon. i have a year and a half left of college. thank GOD.
I have GPA around 6. Suggest some universities outside India where i can get admission for masters?
I’m an Indian doing B.E. (Computer Science and Engineering) in India. At the end of my course, I expect my GPA will be between 5 to 6.5, but I have many certificates (see below)
I haven’t yet given my GRE/TOEFL/IELTS, but I hope it won’t be a big hassle for me.
Can some1 plz list the universties in US/UK in which I have chances of getting admission for Masters?
Is it possible in Auckland University (NZ)? If so what about the living cost when compared to US/UK?
Does GPA dominate over other valuable certificates?

ABOUT THE EDUCATION PATTERN HERE (YOU MAY SKIP READING)
To be frank, only 10% (at most) of the professors/lecturers here know what they’re teaching. Others just blabber something in class and go. They do something in the name of teaching, just to get their salary which is between 20000 to 40000 INR.
Examples:
1) My mam who takes "computer networks" says "this computer will hav a port number right?"
Sad that she doesn’t even know that a computer is identifed by something called IP address.
2) There is another fellow who takes "System Software". He is a big a**. He doesn’t even know basic swap program in C. But he has done M.E.!
The correction pattern here is the worst you can see in the world. 42 pages of answer sheet corrected in 1 and half minutes. They don’t read whats written in the answer sheet. If we write something in a different way (but is correct), they don’t even bother to see if its correct or not. They just want us to write whatever is given in the book. I am not used to this in my school (which was far better). Moreover because if incidents like this, I lost interest in academics and this further made me take things easily. I dont have any satisfaction that i learnt something from college.
This extends to most of the colleges here except IIT, NIT, BITS, SSN, Sastra University etc.

LIST OF CERTIFICATES
During my 11th, i did project on "cartography and cryptography". third place in state level and got consolation prize in national level.
Then I did a small presentation at IIT-M in the same topic as I was asked to do.
.
During my second semester, i was a finalist in a software cracking contest conducted by a Madras Inst. of Tech.
I (along with my school teacher) did an online quiz software using php/js/mysql and we hosted it at IIT madras which was used by around 2000 teachers . Well i know it isn’t a big thing but I hav a appreciation letter from Education officer, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, which comes under Ministry of Human Resource Development (India).
I recently won 2nd prize by participating in a Line following Robot contest.
I was a finalist in a Hacking and three other events conducted by SSN College of Engineering.
I’m got a inplant training offer from CEERI. My friend’s dad is working as a scientist there (:P). And for most of the work he does with students, he encourages students to present an IEEE paper based on it. The good thing is that most of such papers get selected for presentatio at IEEE conferences. I hope I’ll be one among those lucky guys to present and IEEE paper.
Apart from all these, I have many participation certificates.

ok… so with all these… is it possible for me to do masters abroad?
How are my GRE scores?
Hello. I just took the GRE Revised General Test yesterday, and they don’t have automatic estimated scores for the new scoring system, and it told me that in terms of the old scoring system my Verbal Reasoning score was in the 540-640 range, and my Quantitative Reasoning score was in the 670-770 range. It didn’t give any estimation for my Analytical Writing section, of course, but I’m fairly confident that I did well in that section. Are those scores good, poor, or average? I haven’t been able to find a definite scoring chart. Thanks in advance! ![]()
What are my chances of getting into graduate school?
My GPA is 3.42 (w/ the transcripts i sent out). It will be 3.51-3.56 when I graduate.
I am a dual degree student (185 hours completed at time of graduation) with bachelors degrees in Biology and Psychology. Minors in Chemistry and Physics.
My GRE scores are
Verbal – 490
Quant – 640
Analytical (I don’t know yet)
I have LOR’s from 3 doctors. Two i conducted research with (both biology), both studying the HCV. And a 3rd from a materials tech. researcher who i took an advanced biomedical physics course. He has published a bunch of articles and earned a PhD from Brown.
I have done research (3 semesters) studying HCV replication. (I actually did research in there… I did the same procedures as the postdocs and the grad students, I just didn’t do much analysis and writing).
I have also done research in a cog psych lab, studying language processing (wasn’t that great, all I did was attend lab meetings, read papers and run participants through particular experiments).
I am a auxiliary volunteer at a community hospital, volunteering in the Emergency Room.
I also tutored students in biology, physics, and chemistry every week for the last 8 semesters.
I am also an inducted member into the biological honors society…
Here is my list of schools I am applying to. Please let me know what you think my chances are….
Florida State University – Neuroscience
University of Florida – ID program in Biomedical sciences (Neuroscience)
University of Central Florida – Biomedical Science
University of Cincinnati – Cancer Biology
Alabama – Public Health
Michigan State University – Neuroscience
Baylor University – Neuroscience
West Virgina University – Neuroscience
What can I do, crazy professor?
I am finishing up grad school, I have maintained a 4.0 throughout. I have a professor who commented that I would not make an A in his class no matter how I performed. I want to get into a Phd. program and really need a 4.0 because my GRE was not outstanding. True to form on the multiple choice questions I got 20 of 20 correct, but on the subjective discussion questions he killed me. I checked my answers against the text book and I was totally right. What can I do, this guy hates me and has told me so in face to face consultations. He said I am not fit to graduate because I dont have "it". He said I am too book smart and dont have the people skills required. I totally disagree of course and every client I have ever had has been satisfied. What can I do? Keep in mind that this loser is totally unethical, he married one of his students who was 40 years younger. Everyone at the school fears him because he is big and verbally abusive. I stood up to him once in an earlier class and I think he has never gotten over it.
Competitiveness for Coast Guard OCS?
This is a repost from an earlier question because I realized I had left out a lot of key information. I’m still a newbie to yahoo answers! Thank again for all the incoming advice!
I am planning on speaking to a recruiter. But of course, but before I do I just would like to get some feedback on how competitive I would be for OCS so I won’t get laughed out of the recruiter’s office. I am currently getting my masters in public administration and want to serve my country. Here are some of my stats and any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Undergrad GPA- 3.8

Age: 24
Height: 5′10
Weight: 180
Exercise: Usually twice a day at least 5 days a week. Cardio in the morning and weights in the evening.
My criminal record is clean except for a few speeding tickets.
In terms of leadership and work history, my job during my last year of college was as a shift manager at blockbuster and prior to that I had worked at a law firm. I also was treasurer and then president of my college’s Model Arab League debate team for a year. With the red cross I have not really had the time to take on too much responsibility but I am sure that if it would help I could put in more hours and try to get more responsibility.
8 years of tech experience, now want to complete bachelors.. need help?
I completed a 2 years bachelor program in business administration with the exception of 1 course (not completed due to lack of time and necessity to work full time). I have transcripts but no degree. This was back in 2001 and since then I have been working. 4 years in a reputable US organization and eventually in a successful startup to date.
I now want to consider taking up education again, complete my bachelors from a reputable US university and perhaps do a masters.
My issues are:
I can’t afford tution.
I gave toefel eon years ago with a good score but have never given gre or SAT.
I want to know if universities consider work experience of an applicant cos I have years of it.
Need a starting point, any guidance will help. Thanks
What are the eligibility criteria for Technical University of Munich?
I have enrolled in the undergraduate Chemical Engineering course in a reputed college in India. I wish to do my masters from Technical University of Munich. I don’t know German, but there are still four years ahead of me before I apply.
So, is it compulsory to know German and is there a qualifying examination to prove the language proficiency? Apart from GRE, do I have to pass IELTS or TOEFL? If yes, then which is better?
Need information about scholarships.?
I am a B Sc physics 2nd year student. My dream is to study MS in US.But i am totally confused. Please help me.Can i do MS after B Sc?And which course is best in MS?
And i want a scholarship,so how can i obtain it?What are the necessary steps needed to obtain a scholarship(other than TOEFL and GRE)?When should i apply?(i secured 88% in my first year)…Please help me…
Is it irresponsible to take the GMAT with somewhat limited preparation?
I read GMAT books and did practice questions sporadically over the past 15 months. I entered a GMAT class and learned more quantitative skills. I took the GRE and aced both verbal and math sections.
However, I’m taking the GMAT today on something of a lark, because I’m in the midst of a practice course which is becoming truly useless, because I feel totally saturated with knowledge, and because I just want to get the damn thing over with.
My girlfriend gave me hell, but I think I’m ready, and que sera sera.

Getting into Econ Grad School?
I am currently ending my junior year of obtaining a b.s. in econ and an additional major in Statistics from a Big Ten school. I was wondering what my chances are, with the grades i currently have in my math, statistics, and econ classes, of getting into a top 25 or even top 15 grad school.
intro to micro…4.0
intro to macro…4.0
intermediate micro…3.5
intermediate macro…4.0
econometrics I…4.0
international econ…4.0
calc I…3.0
calc II…3.5
calc III…4.0
linear algebra…3.5
real analysis I…3.5
Stats I (400 lvl non calc based)…3.5
Stats II (400 lvl non calc based)…4.0
Stats & Prob I (400 lvl; calc III prereq)…3.5
Stats & Prob II (400 lvl; calc III prereq)…3.5
I still have to take my GRE, and theory of mathematical interest, actuarial models, advanced econometrics, and ill probably take real analysis II as well. The only thing I have a concern about is first semester of my freshman year I slacked bad and was on a path to 2.0 calc I, so i dropped it and got a failing grade for it, then retook it. Its on my transcript, but I feel like i proved myself with averaging a 3.5+ in the rest of my math classes. So with it being such an introductory course 2 years ago will it affect me that much? And will the grades i have obtained help me to get into a top 25 grad school?
"Easiest" Physical Therapy Grad School?
Not that physical therapy is easy, but I would like to know which grad schools (I’m gonna try and major in physiology at a UC and then join a PT grad program either in California or the East Coast) which are accredited of course by APTA would be easiest to GET in to. Ideally, I would like to get into U of Pittsburgh grad school (#2 in the nation) though I have little confidence in getting a 1500 plus on the GRE. (please don’t motivate me, I am trying an assumption and also trying to be realistic at the moment)

Masters in Canada/Us?
Can anyone help me in giving information regarding MS-abroad ? I am a biotechnology graduate from India.I finished B.tech Biotechnology (4year course) with 7.4/10 (CGPA) this year. I am planning to do masters abroad, especially in canada / US . I had 4 backlogs in my second year of study due to non-specific reasons and I successfully completed all of them by the end of fourth year.
My doubts are :
1) Am I eligible for doing masters biotechnology degree in good universities of canada/US with funding if I get good GRE-TOEFL scores?
2) Am I eligible for doing Phd abroad with funding?
3) Do backlogs in academics become big issues during admission procedure?
4) Could u tell me the future of biotechnologists in canada/US ?
Graduate school requirements?
Hey guys, I know I really want to go into graduate school but of course it’s gonna be the case of "low GPA" …
My overall GPA is 2.81, I’m hoping it will go up to 2.9 ish (worst case is 2.85) by the time I’m done with this semester. Past 60 credit hours should be around 3.1-3.2 … I’m aiming for a GRE score of 1300-1400. Needless to say I’m gonna bust my arse prepping for GREs.
I have 1.5 years of research lab experience. This semester alone I have started doing conference presentations and whatnot…. I should have 5 conference presentations and 6 mentored presentations from this semester alone.
I have worked in two research labs of really famous professors in Psychology and I talk to them frequently. One of them developed the general aggression model and the other pretty much invented the field of psychology and law. So I know I can get some really kick-A recommendation letters.
With those stats do you think I would have an okay chance to get into a state university for a PhD program in Psychology?
Some schools I’m thinking about applying to are: Washington State University, University of Iowa, University of Missouri.
Thanks!
