The BEST Psychology GRE Exam preparation, thoughts, suggestions, & experiences?

I am currently preparing to take the GRE exam. I have decided to probably go with either the Princeton Review or a similar type of course for preparation. I am the first person to pursue a graduate degree in my family, and I also had to work full time most of my college career. I had 2 very bad car accidents during college and my transcripts directly reflect the series of obstacles I faced throughout this time so I feel that it is EXTRA important that I do well on this exam to help my chances of acceptance in addition to great reference letters, statement of purpose, and additional volunteer work and research. I would appreciate any test taking tips, suggestions, and positive feedback to help me mentally prepare for this exam.

I have taken 2 preliminary practice exams the first one i didn’t do so well, the second I did ok… but I want to prepare in the best possible way. On a side note I am more of a visual learner and I do way better on essay exams, but have been working on my multiple choice test taking skills and techniques.

I definitely can use the support and feedback and would love to know about others experiences with this exam.

Best wishes & thanks for your time and help!

Have you taken the GRE?

I’m graduating college on the 20th of Dec., and I’m taking 15 hours of credits, and working 40 hours per week. I just decided to move to a new city a few days after graduation, and I have to apply to the grad school program by Jan 13 in order to start in August. I’m worried about the GRE because I don’t have time to study properly for it. I found this Kaplan online course for 99 bucks, it gives you 28 days to practice/study. Will that work? I looked at a book in the library for the GRE and I missed 9 of the first 12 practice questions. I’m also terrible at math.
I have no minimum score requirement, I just don’t want to look stupid. My GPA is a 3.58, but I’m struggling through this semester and will probably end up with Bs and Cs because of no time to study.

Am I ready for the GRE? Is it very difficult?

I want to go to grad school for music education, and need to do this all quick to be in time for the fall. I want to sign up for the GRE, take it 5 days from now, and pass it without ever studying… but can’t afford the time to fail and try again.

Last I checked, I was smart. I was a National Honors Society student in high school, and aced every math course since 1st grade. I graduated HS nine years ago, and have since earned a music degree and teach and perform music. I have not exercised any advanced math or linguistic skills. My music school does not care about my GRE score. It just has to be passing according to the university as a whole.

Do you think I can pass the GRE? What can I do that’s simple and quick to pass it if you don’t think I’m ready?

Please only respond if you have taken this test before.
Yes, according to ets I can register and take the test as early as 5 days from now.

Just taking a poll… Princeton, Kaplan, Testmasters?

Which one of these GRE prep courses will anyone vouch for? I’m interested in how many responses I get for one or the other. I just figure that real-life testimonials are a good way for me to decide on a very costly investment. So which do you all prefer as an in-class prep course? And please nobody say just read the prep books. I’ve tried that before and got a terrible score.

Chances of getting into PhD programs…GRE scores, gpa, etc…?

I am applying to several Cognitive PhD and Sensation and Perception PhD programs. My gpa is lower than I would like: for December 15th deadlines it will be entered as a 3.32 and for deadlines after December 15th it will be a 3.48. Unfortunately, I was extremely unmotivated my first two years of school and did not do well (2.82). However, my last three semesters I have had gpas of 3.65, 3.91 and 4.0. My gpa within psychology is a 3.75 and my upper level course (3000 and 4000) level is a 3.92.

I do not have my writing score from the GRE yet, but I received a 670 on the verbal and a 740 on the math for a total of 1410.

I was just curious as to whether or not my GRE scores could compensate for my GPA. Most programs that I am applying to have a MEAN Gpa of 3.5 and a MEAN GRE of 1200. So I am below on one, higher on the other.

Also, among psychology PhD’s my scores put me in the 96th percentile for both math and verbal.

Obviously I am just nervous about my Gpa. Thanks!

Why do most Australian universities not require GMAT or GRE?

I’m in the process of applying to graduate degree programs in Australia. However I’ve noticed that schools such as University of Sydney and Australian National University do not require GMAT or GRE scores to be sent. Why is that? I’m considering the following programs, any general input would be greatly appriciated:

Test Anxiety with the GRE?

I am on the verge of taking the GRE for the third time this coming December. I just took it today for the second time and I bombed it severely more so than I did the first time. I am currently applying to doctoral programs (one in which I have applied a first time and was denied due to my scores) I have been studying with the Kaplan book, but I cannot afford to take the test prep course. I study fine at home, but when I go to take the test everything blanks and the words become more difficult to read and understand. I then become frustrated. I do not know what to do. All prep courses cost entirely too much, and I greatly desire to enroll in my I/O Psychology programs of choice. Does anyone know of a program that does not heavily weigh GRE scores as this is my only week point?

Does it matter that I bombed quantitative?

I recently took the GRE and I’d say I did pretty well, scoring in the top 1% on verbal. I also scored well on the analytical writing assessment. But I completely bombed the math. It looks like I didn’t even try: and I did! I basically would have been better off guessing. I blame this on the fact that I got out of college without taking one math course. Does this really matter for a PhD applicant in humanities? (There is nothing more remotely related to math than my subfield). Should I retake and jeopardize my verbal score?

Quantum on Physics GRE?

I am taking my GRE Physics subject test in the fall, and I am set for nearly all of the different aspects of the test except Quantum.

I will be taking Quantum in the spring, but other than that, all I have are different quantum stuff was touched upon in Nuclear and AMO, as well as some very intro stuff from Intro Physics and Modern Physics (Basic Schrodinger concepts, Wave + Particle natures of photons, Bound systems and Radioactivity)

All of this contained little math and did not delve very deep into QM.

So my question is, if I want to dedicate 25-30 hours of study to Quantum before my GRE test in the fall, what should I study? These are GRE Multiple Choice problems, so anything too mathematical won’t help, but what are the key concept that could be asked on the test? I’ll pick up the more difficult math in the spring when I take the actual course.

Has anyone studied and taken the GRE with self-prep books and done fairy well?

I’ve taken it this past August and haven’t done so well, I got an 800 from both verbal and quantitative. I felt very disappointed because in my practice tests, I did in the thousands (1200, 1175… ). I was going to take it again in December for Xmas break but I took 20 units for my fall semester, August to December, so I haven’t studied for my GRE at all.

Now I’m debating whether to take a kaplan course or something to help me do better for my retake but I really don’t have the money.

I just wanted to know if there was anyone out there that tried studying for the GRE with self-prep books and did pretty good (especially the second time around)???

Is GRE verbal reasoning part that important for non-native english speakers?

Although my English is pretty good, I’m really concerned about my upcoming GRE examination. Obviously, I won’t be able to score as good as a native English speaker in verbal reasoning. My average score so far is 460-480 (in practice tests). I don’t really expect to get more than 500.
On the other hand, I’ve got best academic records on the entire course, competitive TOEFL score and a good chance to get a perfect (or at least almost perfect) score in GRE math reasoning part. However, since I’m applying for the world’s top universities, such as MIT and Princeton, I’m really concerned about GRE verbal test.

Do you think its so important that I should completely switch to memorizing as many new English words as I can?

I'm having serious trouble with the GRE….will a low score affect my chance of getting accepted?

Applying to graduate school in a social sciences-related degree and one of the components of the application are GRE scores.

I am an international student so I did not need to take the SAT’s when I went to college and so the whole idea of "standarized testing" is brand new to me. This GRE is killing me. I spent over a thousand dollars on a prep course and I still have a low score on the practice tests.
My overall GPA is 3.6 and I have strong letters of recommendation and a personal statement that both facutly members called "outstanding". I also at the undergraduate level presented at a national conference. Do you think a GRE score that is low will hurt?
My average scores on practice tests are:
AW: no idea
V: 350
Q: 250

Should I retake my GRE test?

I know it is a little long but PLEASE help me out here – I am a student majoring in animal sciences in Philadelphia for my undergraduate bachelors whom is planning on applying to veterinary school for my doctorate. My cumulative GPA is a 3.35 (technically a 3.4 but I had to average out a course I retook for some of the schools I am applying to), my last 45 hour GPA is a 3.63, I have a ton of relevant work experience in the animal sciences including work as a paid animal laboratory technician, a volunteer at the Philadelphia zoo, and as a volunteer at the University of Pennsylvania’s veterinary hospital. I have solid recommendations coming from a veterinarian, a veterinary nurse, and from a doctor at my college. I am planning on applying to the Universities of Missouri, Colorado, Pennsylvania, & Iowa. I am concerned becuase my GRE scores aren’t all that spectacular – verbal: 460 quant: 610 and AW: 4.0
I have checked the schools I am applying to and while I am not very far off from their average GRE scores I am still below for them. My question is whether or not you think I should retake the test. I really wouldn’t want to retake the test becuase I would have to miss work, pay 150 bucks for the test, go through the stress of studying again, and of course go through the grueling four hours of testing again. Also Missouri only counts the GRE as 4% of their evaluation on whether or not you are admitted and I am very close to the averages for Iowa. I mean all of the school averages that I am off by (except UPenn) I am off by about 20-30 points and the test is in 10 point increments so I mean were really only talking about 3-4 questions right/wrong. And if I retake them I am not guaranteed a better score and I really did try very hard to do well the first time. So what do you think? Thanks for any help you can offer.

What are your thoughts on the GRE exam?

I am 48 years old. A tired but experienced nurse. I have a BSN degree. I would like to get a master degree and begin a role as a Nurse Practitioner. I do not want to take the GRE exam. My GPA from college years was 3.16. University of Michigan requires a 3.25 if not taking the GRE.

What do you all think? I just have not been in a classroom for a very long time. I am anxious about the GRE and not doing well. (even if I prepare and take a study course) I would just like to apply to a master’s program and get started.

GRE or GMAT the better option?

I got a 480 on the verbal section of the GRE and a 660 on the quantitative. Should I re-take it?

I have heard that scores do not really change and that was my score AFTER taking a prep course. I want to apply to clinical and counseling psych doctoral programs but my verbal is rather low. Other than that, I have research and clinical experience and will have strong letters of recommendation. I don’t know how to even improve my verbal without memorizing the entire dictionary. Any suggestions or words of advice.

A question about the GRE….was it flawed?

I took a prep course (a very well known test prep company) and I kept track of my scores on the sample CAT’s. My score did in fact increase with time, but the actual GRE that I took yesterday was about the same as the score I received on the diagnostic CAT. The diagnostic CAT was basically the first GRE CAT test I ever took without any preparation, and it was intended (by the prep-course) to determine your weaknesses/strengths. Anyway, as I mentioned my score did increase over time, but when I took the real GRE yesterday my score was about the same as the diagnostic. So basically, I wasted 3 months of studying for nothing? Basically, the exam had VERY different types of questions than what I was preparing for…….
Is it possible that something was wrong with the GRE that I took? Like a computer glitch or something?

GRE / GMAT / TOEFL whats it all about?

Hi, i am doing my first year engg in comp. I have very specific query which i would like someone here to answer.

1. I am interested in doing a MBA degree in US. ( Remember i doing comp, and am aspiring to become an entrepreneur) which MBA course should i opt for?

2. It is necessary to take both GRE and GMAT? ( I am totaly novice at this, please don’t laugh if this question sounds silly to you!)

3. As i have mentioned earlier i am in first year, when is the correct time to take TOEFL, GRE and GMAT?

4.What is the target score in the respective exams that i should be aiming for if i want to get into top 100 universities in USA/UK.

5. I have to admit that, i am not nerd material! So which is decent college( You know, Not 2 good and not bad at all kinda thing?) for me.

6. This last question goes out to the people who are studying in US – Is it worth it mate? Going to US? I did my high school in UK and that was brilliant! But US with gun cultural and racism is it worth it. Thank u!

how long did it take you to study for the GRE and how did you do it???

I’ve been studying the word lists for months and when I review them I hardly remember any of them!!! Any ides?
Also, did you take the Kaplan course? was it helpful?

GRE questions?

Just decided to go to graduate school,. but if I want to apply I have to take GRE’s in September. Not a smart move, because I have only one month to study. Do you think I can do it or should I wait for a year and take a course.
P. S. I did not do too well on SAT, because English is my third language. However in three years I am pretty sure it improved and I am a walking proof that tests like SAT are b.s. With low SAT scores I am a top student at my university. Should I go for low GRE score and hope that Graduate schools select me because of my good grades, or GRE is a very important factor?
