PostHeaderIcon I wish to study in the USA…but how?

Looking for info on gre preparation classes, gre preparation courses, gre test course and more?

Hi and welcome to my blog,

I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his GRE exam.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great Gre guide that helped me a lot
So study hard and good luck!

I am soon completing my tenth grade and I wish to pursue my dream of becomming a space scientist, by studying in the USA, and then joining NASA.
I presently study in India, and have heard a lot about the GRE and TOEFL tests, but I still feel that I am in the dark about them.
Could anyone tell me what path I need to take from now, to achieve what I want to (such as what courses I need to take, what institutions I may approach and the like)

PostHeaderIcon Question about requirements to get in a university(NAU for physical therapy)?

I plan to go to Northern Arizona University to study physical therapy. Here are the requirements:

Completion of a baccalaureate degree of your choice. There is no preference given to any particular baccalaureate degree.

GRE scores

Completion of the required prerequisite science courses by the end of the spring semester (or quarter) prior to commencing the program, with no more than two 2 prerequisite courses being taken the last spring. These courses include:

one year of laboratory and lecture-based anatomy and physiology courses
one year of laboratory and lecture-based general chemistry
one year of laboratory and lecture-based college level physics
one semester of general psychology
one semester of statistics
one semester of abnormal OR developmental psychology

can I take the classes above at a community college?

I’m not a huge fan of math but I don’t struggle with it.

What is statistics like as a math class?

What does it mean when it says there is no preference given to any particular baccalaureate degree?
can I have complete a degree in something that is not relevant to physical therapy?
What if I take psychology and statistics
during my high school years..would they count that?

PostHeaderIcon How can I study, focus, & concentrate if my OCD unwanted thoughts are hindering me from doing so?

I can’t even read the 1st 3 words of a sentence without those thoughts, & they’re repetitive. It’s depriving me from learning, & professors say I don’t follow directions, & that I don’t pay attention. I can’t control my mind wandering, trying to fight these thoughts away. & I can’t let the thoughts succeed & go through. I don’t want to. They’re poisonous thoughts that I can’t get out of my head. This causes me to fail exams & not do well in school. I have a BA in Spanish, but with a low GPA. So, I have the opportunity to take extra courses to raise my GPA & take the GRE, & I’m having the same problem studying for the GRE. Nothing is sinking in. Nothing I read or study. I don’t want this do destroy me & me feel like a failure & unable to get into graduate school to study linguistics & continuing my Spanish studies.

PostHeaderIcon Would courses from the USDA Graduate School look good on an Alternate Transcript?

The Question:

I am looking to progress towards a Graduate Degree in Economics / Development Economics and (slowly if need be) work my way into a Tier 1 / Top 50 program. [Example: Getting into JHU's M.A. in Applied Econ program, and (a lot)later entering into Berkeley's ARE program for a PhD...]

For an application to a Master’s program, Would it look better to:

A) Take pre-requisites like Econometrics, Linear Algebra, Calculus I & II at the USDA Graduate School (my most economical option)?

B) Apply to another satellite branch of the University of Maryland(Baltimore) and work towards completing a Bachelors in Econ? Or, simply take pre-requisite courses here?

C) Re-enroll as a student at my old University, (University of Maryland) which has a top- ranked Econ program, and work towards a Bachelor’s despite my disadvantaged GPA? Or, simply take pre-requisite courses here?

Here’s some background:

Undergrad: 2002-2007

I graduated with a B.A. in English from the University of Maryland with a cumulative GPA of 2.47. (3.0 at a previous institution. 2.1 at UMD, for a combined 2.47)

Post-Undergrad: 2009-2010

I have taken Intro to Macroeconomics / Microeconomics at a community college: Received A’s in both.

I have taken Intermediate Microeconomics / Macroeconomics and Pre-calculus at the University of Maryland University College (satellite branch): Received A’s in all.

Work Experience: 2005-Present

I have 5 years work experience, with 2 years relevant work experience due to my AmeriCorps Service Year and from my Internship at a leading Economic / Community Development firm.

*Qualifiers:

*I know that many of you are going to point towards recommendations, personal statements, and GRE scores. Don’t worry, I have that covered. I simply want to quantitatively prove that I am now FIT for graduate school, as I was not before due to personal issues and immaturity. Unless any of you have concerns

**Please don’t hit me with the age old counter-question, "Why do you want to go to grad school? It’s hard work, etc…" If you want me to explain, I’ll go into detail with a Private Message. :)

PostHeaderIcon grad school admission- continuing ed? trying too hard?

So I am cleaning up my portfolio for grad school applications, took a couple more grad level courses locally and scored an A and a B+. Took the GRE subject test, and GRE General. I still think, that although I have a masters in the major I want to earn a PhD in, that my undergrad record with a C average will STILL close the doors on the top programs I want to go to. Also, I don’t think I scored so hot on the subject test. And, I had to take the couple of courses recently since in my masters program I didn’t reconcile my lack of preparation back then, and hence scored some B-s in my masters program.

So, if I don’t get into a top program that I would like to go to, do people think that simply going to the program I want to earn a PhD in and taking some more courses and getting A’s in them and recommendations is a viable way to get into that program? Or would I be trying too hard? Or even worse potentially setting myself up for a possible rejection?

PostHeaderIcon What career path should I take? Physical Therapy?

Currently I am in a bad situation. I lost my job at Circuit City Inc in 2009 when they went out of business. I enjoyed my job it was not hard to sit behind a desk and approve/deny financing. But I also loved the people that I worked with that is what made the job fun and interesting. So when Circuit city went out of business I decided to fall back on my degree (Bachelors of Science in Psychology). I worked at residential treatment facility with at risk youth and I also worked a group homes. Those jobs were ok. I didn’t really enjoy it. The pay wasn’t that great and I had to deal with bad kids that wanted to try to fight me, curse at me, and harm themselves and others.

So now I am unemployed and I think this a good time to change fields/career path. So I thought about Physical Therapy. From what I understand it is a great field to get into. The only thing is I am nervous that once I apply that the schools are not going to take me in the program because my undergrad GPA is low. I do have to take prerequisite courses (physics, chemistry, anatomy) and take the GRE before entering the program but will it be enough for me to get As in those courses and try to score high on the GRE? Or should I just do something completely different. I don’t know please help me figure this out.

PostHeaderIcon Dietetics Universities in Indianapolis?

My GRE Score is 620 and I want to know which university can I get for doing Dietetics courses in Indianapolis? Please reply

PostHeaderIcon Is it possible for a person to clep out of all undergraduate courses and receive his/her degree?

I just started a new job and 2 bosses claim that they both obtained their undergraduate degrees solely by taking the clep exams. One also says that he obtained his Masters degree solely by passing the GRE. I took clep exams for some of my undergraduate courses, but it was my understanding that those exams are only for basic first-year courses and that you can’t clep out of everything — you have to spend some time in the classroom. Re: the GRE, I’ve taken that as a prerequisite for being admitted to graduate school. I’ve never heard of someone being able to take it and be granted a Masters degree based on passing it. Is there something here I don’t know about? (P.S. Both of these bosses are ex-military, if that has anything significance.)

PostHeaderIcon Question about Grad school?

I’m in my final semester as an undergrad math major. I’m trying to decide between going to grad school for applied statistics or pure math.

I have a problem though. Like anyone else applying for grad school, I want to qualify for a fellowship or stipend. However, because of my schedule and the limited math majors at my school, I didn’t get to take topology, differential equations, and group theory. I have a 3.67 g.p.a and have gotten better than an A- in all my math courses.

I going to take the GRE to reinforce my qualifications. Any suggestions on how to teach myself topology, differential equations and group theory in 3 weeks? I need to get a high score on the GRE to compete against others for a fellowship/stipend.

Also, any ideas on good schools for applied statistics or pure math? (maybe schools that don’t worry as much about a GRE score and give more weight to G.P.A?)

Any answers would be appreciated.

PostHeaderIcon I'm looking to become a neurosurgeon. I have a few questions.?

What courses should I take in my first four years of college? Major? Minor? Double or not? When should I start studying for the GRE and the MCAT. How do I cope with if I don’t pass the first time. Anyone know of study groups or support systems available. I’ve wanted to do this for some time now and since I’m starting college in 2011 I’d like to know where to go from here.

PostHeaderIcon do graduate schools look at your high school GPA?

do they?

I happened to have a not-so-stellar ~ 2.8 GPA in high school because I didn’t like the situation and thus didn’t care too much about it. I did get something like 96-99th percentile ACT/SAT scores back then because I knew that I had high intellectual ability/IQ, I just wasn’t using it for my high school work.

Now I’m about to finish my honors summa cum laude business finance BA degree with all my pre-med pre-reqs (since I wanna be an MD and then get my MBA) with at a college that’s tons better than than the one I started off at (thanks to a transfer). i was able to get impressive scores on the GRE for my BA and MCAT for my pre-med/med school aspirations.

anyway, when applying for med school and then later business school, will those graduate colleges care about the fact that i didn’t do too stellar in high school? (i actually failed a couple courses back in high school :( )

PostHeaderIcon Need advice before starting MBA Finance program/ havent been to college in 14 years?

Graduated with ComSci major/Bus Adm minor in 1994. I work full time and want to go back for MBA in Finance. I don’t want to feel overwhelmed so I wonder….Would you advise preparing for just taking the GRE? or would you advise taking courses to re-acquaint myself with college coursework. I’m dreading taking classes with a pace that is suited for grads fresh out of college vs someone who hasn’t been to college in 14 years HELP??

PostHeaderIcon Graduate School Admissions? ?

I am currently a senior and will be graduating this December with a double major in History and Anthropology and a minor in Islamic Studies. I have a cumulative GPA of 3.68, but my last three years are a 3.94. Both of my major GPA’s are above a 3.8 and I received a GRE score of 1280. I was wondering if I should go ahead and apply to the graduate schools listed below, or should I wait and get my GRE score up and take more courses? I also have research and internship experience. I will be applying to programs in Middle Eastern/Islamic Studies.

The schools I am applying to are:
Harvard Divinity
New York University
Georgetown
University of Michigan
University of Washington

PostHeaderIcon I am an engineering student in india,i want to do ms in abroad, may i please know d courses available …?

i am very much interested in opting VL SI..please give me the exact idea about this and also tell me about GRE exam

PostHeaderIcon Do I have a chance of getting into a Psy.D. program?

I’m 25, B.S. in biology. Will do well on GREs for sure (lots of studying until I’m ready). Don’t have any extracurriculars (just not that type of person) although I might join a club soon.

From what I hear it is very competitive.. so I really don’t see how I could get in especially since I don’t have a bachelor’s in psychology

Do I have a chance? Especially if:

1) I take a semester of psychology courses, the core ones that most programs seem to require

2) Do extremely well (95% or higher) on the GREs

3) Do well on the psychology GRE by studying for a few years for it

4) Join Psi Chi during the semester I take the psych classes

PostHeaderIcon what should i do after engineering?

am confused..what should i really do after engg? my friends have joined classes for mba entrance and GRE TOEFl.. but they just followed the crowd.. i dont have much idea about the courses and want to be well informed about them before choosing one..have entered into third year now.. but want to decide soon..please help..

PostHeaderIcon What are my chances at a Clinical Psychology Ph. D.?

I will be senoir this coming Fall and I am contemplating giving some doctorate programs a shot. I scored a 1260 (670 V + 590 Q) on the GRE. My quantitative score is disappointing and I might retake it. I currently hold a 4.0 through 107 credit hours – although I guess I am not attending a "prestigious" school. I still have some tough courses left (Human Physiology is one of them) so I might graduate with a 3.9 or so, but hopefully no lower than that…
Here are the schools I am considering for a Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology:
Texas Tech
Sam Houston State
North Texas
SMU
UT Southwestern
LSU

I will help two faculty members with their research project this coming year and I plan on volunteering to get some "real world" clinical experience. I know how competitive Clinical programs can be, so I kind of feel like this might be too little too late… If there are any grad students out there – How much do you fell this will hurt my chances of being admitted?

Thanks!

PostHeaderIcon How can I sort out my feelings?

I dated guy #1 for 4 years, was engaged for 6 months, and had started planning our wedding. Our relationship had a lot of little problems that were workable, if both people were invested on working on them. I was living at home and commuting to school, and he kept going away to school. I was planning our wedding with my mom while he decided to pursue a graduate degree he couldn’t get a job with (he was putting off getting a job and paying his loans back). Every time we would fight, or I would point out a problem, he would suggest that we will work on it and fix it when he comes home (for good). I got to the point after a year and a half of a long term relationship that he was never going to come home (he still had 1-2 years left of his degree and he was looking for jobs out of the area). I was frustrated, tired of fighting and felt so alone. I was tired of continually putting so much work into a relationship when I felt he wasn’t. So I called of the wedding and broke up with him.

A couple weeks later, I jumped into a rebound relationship with my coworker. I found him attractive but it started mostly as a way for me to try to forget about my ex. Looking back, I know I should have taken the time to be by myself and get over my ex, but hindsight is 20/20. Well this rebound turned into a 5 month relationship. Everything was great between me and guy #2, until 4-5 months in when my ex and I started talking again thinking we could be friends. This confused me to the point where I felt I needed to give guy #1 another chance because I was convinced I had just given up and broken up with him instead of sticking it out and trying to make things work.

Well time #2 with guy #1 was horrible. It started off ok, but guy #1 was very insecure and we started fighting a lot. I was taking a prep course for the GRE and was pouring a lot of time into preparing for this test and working and guy#1 was getting mad that I was not spending enough time with him. As the test was approaching, I felt like guy #1 didn’t respect me and was getting too controlling. I broke up with him again because I was frustrated and tired of fighting (literally every time I talked to him we fought) and I didn’t want to bomb this test and not get into grad school.

A couple weeks later, I got back with guy #2. A couple months later – present time- I realize I need to take time for myself and figure things out.

Currently, I am still in love (not to the same degree as before obviously) with guy#1. We have a history, parts of us work well, parts of him I still love. But so much has happened that I don’t know if I miss him or a 4 year relationship. I don’t know if all the good is worth the bad.

As for guy #2, he is great and I am in love with him as well. THere are things about him that aren’t perfect, but there is plenty with me that isn’t perfect. I feel like I belong with him because we are so compatible. I just don’t know how to get over my ex (guy #1). I understand i need to take time for myself but I don’t know what that means. How do I get to a place where I don’t question my decisions, and how do I figure out that guy #1 (or i guess guy #2) is 100% not the guy for me? I can’t picture my life with out either of them, but I can cut guy #1 out of my life for long periods of time and be ok?

PostHeaderIcon anyone ever applied to a graduate program?

Have any of you ever applied to a graduate program on a short notice/pressed for time and got accepted? I for example want to apply to grad school for Fall 2012 and the deadlines are either late this year or early next year. I feel like the time it takes to get my portfolio, resumes, letters of rec, personal statements, GRE scores(which i haven’t even taken yet) etc… materials together that it may show that I rushed through it all when it comes to them accepting me or not.

I want to know have any of you ever rushed and applied to grad school and got accepted? Of course my material will be its top quality it can, but I still feel a bit discouraged. I should’ve planned way in advance for all this.?? THNX!

PostHeaderIcon Applying to grad school (English major) – is my GPA good enough?

My cumulative GPA is only 3.81.
I haven’t taken the GRE yet (I’m taking it next month); but my SAT scores were:
Verbal: 800
Writing: 740
Math: 670

I’m taking honors independant study courses, and I know a few profs who will definitely give me good recommendations. How are my chances? How good a school can I reasonably hope to get into?
Oh, thanks. Those answers are SO helpful.
